R50/53 Rally/driving lights legality in California
OK I have heard of a few people in Cali getting tickets or warnings for their rally lights. When I bought mine (OEM dealer installed) I was told according to Law I couldn't operate more than four lights at once, which is why the fogs are connected to the Low beams and the rally to the high. So I checked the DMV manual for clarification on both of these subjects, this is what I found.
DIV 12 sec 24402 accessory driving lights may be used but must not be used with low beams olunted more than >16 inch <42. Passing lights may be used inconjunction with low and high beams.
DIV 12 sec 24405 not more than 4 lamps will be lit at one time to include
Fog
driving
aux lights
headlights
spotlights
passings lights
for the purpose of this section each dual set of lights will count as one lamp.
Div 12 sec 24411 off road aux lamps--------must be covered and wired seperately from other lighting and not have more than 8.
What I get from reading those sections is our driving lights can be considered aux lights for highway use and we should not get tickets for them. secondly we should be able to have 4 lights on at a time this would go against what I ve beeen told about the fog/driving light issue.
Has anyone read up on this am I reading the sections right? Has anyone fought the fix-it ticket using these sections.

>>>olunted more than >16 inch <42<<<< ?????????????? what was this supposed to read??
What's a "passing light"????
Looking at the 2nd section it seems you can actually have 8 lights going at once.

Moorlockx,
It means Higher that 16 inches but lower than 42 inches above the pavement.
A "passing light" is a throwback to vehicle of yesteryear that when lit would say "OK to PASS" They were generally mounted on the left rear bumpers or fenders of cars and trucks. I found one at an antique store a few years ago.
You can look up any of the sections of the Ca Vehicle Code here
