BSH Oil Catch Can - No Baffle!

I had some warranty work done on my MINI and the mechanic had to take my BSH occ off to troubleshoot the issue. I have to hand it to the dealer for doing this without any headaches on my part.

To make a long story short, I am looking at the catch can the other day and I don't see any baffles inside the can. Non, zero, zilch. I called BSH and they were pretty receptive on the phone but the promised phone calls back never happened. Called again today and again nothing.

I guess I should have really inspected the thing first but I was so excited to protect my intake valves that I put the thing right on. Yes it caught some muck but the dealer still observed enough carbon on the valves that they had to do the walnut cleaning.

As of right now I am not feeling the love, but I am going to hold out a bit longer to see if they can make this right.

That's a little concerning, especially since the reason the BSH catch cans are so expensive is because of the advertised baffle!

Still hoping that they do right since I was sold a defective part. It is not even that it broke or failed, it was missing a key element in the product.

I am still waiting for that phone call back.

How do you know it doesn't have a baffle?
It's pretty hard to see inside one of those catch cans. I understand that the baffle is a vertical plate between the two hose connections. Did you probe inside the can with a piece of stiff wire?

I still have the catch can out of the car and all the ports are open so I can see pretty well inside. Sadly I don't see any type of baffle or diverter inside the can. I can also put the dipstick partially in the can and move it around, it doesn't bump into anything.

So the car only had 22k on it when the dealer cleared the intake valves.

I have a Moroso can on my Challenger. You can definately see the baffling though the hose connectors (not to mention it screws apart for easy cleaning).

Should also fit in a MCS, but I haven't tried yet.

The whole 5-days I owned a BSH catch can for my MINI I did peer inside the can through one of the ports and it did have a baffle inside. However, I still wasn't sold on the design and decided to manually clean my intake/ports valves. It's not worth the money for the N14 IMHO. I can't imagine paying up the rear for their catch can for the N18 engine!!!!

Like so many of you, I too want to protect my engine/valves. I pony'd up and bought the BSH OCC. According to what I have read on NAM, this is the creme de le creme of OCC's.

I received my OCC a few days after a back order was released. I removed the OCC from the box and heard a jingling around inside. There was a baffle inside but not attached to any point inside the OCC. The baffle was maybe 2 to 2 1/2" tall and was just sliding up and down inside the OCC. When in the upright position with the inlet and outlet at the top of the can the baffle would fall to the bottom of the OCC.

I called BSH and they wanted me to send it back to them. FedEx delivered it to them on 5/4. I hope to hear something soon. I hope to have a proper OCC back even more.

I will keep everyone updated as this is an investment for anyone.

Update - BSH has my catch can and will add the missing baffle. I should have it back in a week. Kudos to BSH for fixing this.

I am ok with them adding a baffle. I actually like the idea of them fixing the problem. If I got a new one I could end up with what myR56S has seen.

I just hope that this is not a QC issue with BSH, they seem to make some nice stuff.

i'm kinda glad bsh took their time bringing their n18 OCC to market. i was dead set on getting one, but have since questioned the effectiveness, and now the quality, of their OCCs. that you prefer to have yours modified than to have them send you a new one is an indication to me that their quality control is not up to snuff.

Baffled?

mine with or without baffle pulled alot of water and oil out of the engine, not so much in the summer.

pretty consistent with everyone else's experience around here - the OCC seems to fill up a lot more quickly in cold(er) climates.

Jomama, I'm still wondering of the need with the N18. Vis-a-vis the cold weather issue... Seems that it isn't a factor in Savannah anymore, even during winter!

on cold nights, we can get down to the mid/upper 40s here in socal. not sure if that's enough cause for concern. when i installed my alta fmic, there was not an ounce of slime or sludge or anything on my pipes. i've also checked that tube that runs from the crankcase to the intake and nothing there either. <shrug>

I have the BSH OCC/boost port and I get very little if nothing at all during the summer. But as things get colder, I'm emptying the can on a weekly basis as its full of water and sludge.

That being said, I still need to pop one of the lines to check regarding the baffle. If its not in there, I'm going to be very disappointed as this was one of the main selling features.

Well I kept the new occ off as long as I could. Today was my last service under the free maintenance and I put the can back on tonight after I put the kids to sleep.

I changed it up a bit this time and mounted it in the front after I removed the air hose. I am now looking forward to a few mods to the car now that it is off the maintenance.

Kudos to bsh for sending me a new can! I am thinking about the bsh motor mount as one of my next mods.

We'll be pulling the intake manifold on a N18 engine from an R56 MCS with about 13K miles next week. Will post pictures on the intake valves inspection on NAM afterward showing the results.
