EEEK! Help! Oh my! My MINI decided to go crazy this morning!! I was driving in to work and it was raining very hard. Well, when I went to turn on the defogers, guess what....didn't work! So there I was with completely fogged windows not being able to see 1/2 inch in front of me (did I mention I was doing 50 on the highway??) Ok, so as if it couldn't get any worse, my flat tire light came on. Just then, all my interior lights started blinking and flickering (including my clock!!) My turn signals stopped working and my temp. gauge went all the way to high. I thankfully made it to work but couldn't even SEE the parking spaces in the garage. I had to pull over and frantically try to wipe my window with Kleenex! Yikes! I am waiting for a call back from the dealership. They are going to try to get someone to come pick her up since there is no way I can leave work all day to take her in. I'll keep you posted on what they tell me. Anyone else have anything like this happen? She's about 2 months old and has 3,500 miles on her. I think she has PMS!!

Crap! Yeah it's raining like hell in Baltimore today, too.....

Wow that is really weird! Did it stay that way all the way to work or was it just for a short period of time?
Nothing like that has ever happened...but you did what I would do in that situation....

I'm glad you're ok!

L. Mini-Thanks! It was like that for the whole ride to work (about 45 minutes!) I tried to drive extra slow just in case I did have a flat but when I eventually parked, the tired were fine...really weird!

When you got to work did you shut the car off and turn it back on again?
I would want the dealership to pick the car up, too. Not only because I couldn't get away from work, but because I would be a little freaked after something like that!

It sounds like water managed to get inside your Body Control Module. You have a case of damp electronics. Have it towed back to the dealer and tell them to check and make sure that the Body Control plastic cover is not allowing water and moisture inside the module. This was a common complaint in very early build European market MINIs and some early production US/Canada market cars.

A change was made mid-production to introduce a newly revised Body Control module cover to correct this very same issue. Since your car is only 2 months old, I tend to think it already has the revised body control cover, but then again it might not.

Also don't be surprised if the dealer needs to order a new body control module from the factory. (Could take anywhere from a few days to a week or more).

Glad you make it OK to work.

PS: Ask for a loaner. If I were you I will be putting a call to MINIUSA right after the dealer gives you a final diagnose. You might be out of a car for a few days until the new part arrives.

I just tried starting it up and although the engine started, nothing else would come on (lights, speedometer, etc.) The computer is totally fizzled! I called MINI and they told me to bring it in right away. I told them, HELLO!, I don't think it's driveable! So I had to call roadside asst. to come tow her. What a sad day for Holly. Only 2 months old and getting her first tow. So....now how do I get home tonight??!!

See my previous post. You have all the symptoms that point out to a soaking wet Body Control Module Computer. Call MINIUSA again and ask them to at least give you a rental car allowance refund or something. Unless the dealer has a Body Control module on hand, I am afraid your car will not be ready to go home tonight.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Should be a fairly simple fix....just swap the Body Control Modules. But it sucks 'cause you are basically going to be out of a car for a few days so the inconvenience this creates far outweighs the simplicity of the repair itself.

Just out of curiosity, what's your MINI's build date?

You didn't drive the car thru a deep pool of water?

Waterlogging wouldn't surprise me....Kpiglet, you are in PA right? My neighborhood is pretty much flooded this morning....and all this after a drought all summer.....
Cooper4us made a really good diagnosis I think.

Cooper4us...Thanks! (and good morning to you! Good morning everyone!) I am in love with my car.....there I said it....I love my pure silver Mini!

I just loaded her onto the flatbed Poor girl! The only thing I can think of was the heavy rain this morning. I didn't drive through any deep water and my area hasn't recieved much rain. Oh so sad! We are having a MINI reunion with the dealership this Sunday (we are driving together to Seven Springs.) Oh how I hope she is better by then!

When I had my 84 Mini Mayfair I would take it to the car wash every Saturday. One Saturday it just freaked out. All guages went dead, ran horribly. It took about an hour or 2 and then ran fine. Needless to say I started hand washing it. I think water got into the electric system in the dash and even got into the distributor. WD-40 cured the distributor, but only time could cure the guages. Perhaps there's a leak in one the engine compartment "water tight" enclosures. There's an awful lot of electronics in these new fangled contraptions these days.

Cheers and good luck

The engine water strips have nothing to do with this. It looks like the BCM (Body Control Module) got wet inside. This is a known issue with early production MINIS and is due to a faulty plastic cover that allows water and moisture to get inside the computer board. Easily fixed, but it causes major problems. Likely, a replacement BCM with the updated cover will be required.

Ryan-
Not that I should be responding to such a mean-hearted post but to clarify....
I OBVIOUSLY had to continuously wipe my window as I was driving or I wouldn't have been able to see to drive now would I??!! I had to pull over once I got in the garage because the average temp. in my office's underground garage is about 80 degrees with 100% humidity and it made the windows 100% worse!
Now that I have that cleared up...what's that saying again? Oh yes...if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all!

I think the wisest thing to do is to refrain from replying to rude and inflammatory posts.

I agree. Of course, if one were to reply to his unpleasant posting, one might mention the four spelling errors and five grammar and punctuation mistakes he made in such a brief diatribe. Mind you, I'm not saying I would necessarily do this.

Kpiglet, the fact that you got yourself and your car safely to a place where you could deal with it testifies to your handling of the situation. Well done.

Although I certainly agree with the policy - and L.Mini's reminder post, let's not go overboard and into the opposite direction - by directly attacking Ryan.

Stands for Internet Relay Chat. Mostly a bunch of kids that think it is cool to cuss online, talk about linkin park and how high they got during 2nd period biology. Oh yea, and hackers use IRC to pass information around as well. IMO, a pretty nasty place to hang out.
