Key replacement

How can I replace a lost key, without paying the big bucks that a dealer would charge me? I had two keys and have lost one.

Which generation MINI? Original Mini, Gen 1 MINI, or Gen 2 MINI?

I'm pretty certain that the answer is "you can't." But if you have a first gen (and possibly 2nd gen without comfort access), you can get just the remoteless key, if it's merely to serve as a backup. That will save a little bit. So you know what you are getting into, realoem.com lists the different keys, along with prices (your local dealer may vary). I didn't think it was all that bad. I'm remembering something like $80.00 for the first gen remote key, but I could be off. And with first gen (at least), you can program the remote yourself.
