Smile Diesel: really really WANT!

Rented CooperSD in Prague last week. Took it on a 2500 mile trip through Europe. So all i can say is I wish i could have this engine in my Countryman. Sweetest thing ever! So much bottom power! So smooth and quiet. 41mpg doing 130kph average. I wish they started offering this engine here in US.
Also got a lil MINI souvenir. Light bulbs holder. Never seen it in US

+1!

I'd love a diesel. Do they offer it in an all4?

Can't think of any consumer car that's a diesel AWD here

There was a Grand Cherokee CRD for like a year, I think. Most wouldn't think of it as a car, even though it's got the sissy suspension now.

Edit: Making a dumb assumption that it was offered in 4wd or AWD. But since a lot of Jeeps are 2wd, I could be wrong there.

yak52pilot, you mean 130 kph average, right? Very nice fuel economy; about like my VW TDI, but I think the BMW diesel has more HP.

The A3 TDI Quattro comes to mind. It was on my short list when I purchased the CMS4.

It looks as if I have mis-spoken. The TDI is NOT available in Quattro!
I have had a few Audi's, and was leaning towards the A3. I assumed too much I guess when I thought I could get TDI and Quattro. But after going to build one just now I see there is no option for Quattro! Most the pitty!

There's 1 car (Mercedes S-350 BlueTEC 4Matic) and a few SUVs: Touareg TDI, Q7 TDI, X5 35d, M and GL350 BlueTEC.

We have a Jetta Sportwagen TDI and it is great. Great power/torque curve, 45 MPG on my wife's commute into the city.

Nice! Here in Prague SD models are quite popular, almost every Countryman is SD version (but SD Cooper-hatch is rare thing).
Hope you enjoyed your visit here (by the way, that Cooper is from my MINI dealership, i think i have seen it there)

Did everyone see the quote from Kay Segler today in the C&D interview on the future of Mini diesels in the US?

Q: Are diesel models a possibility for the U.S.?

A: Diesels in general are a topic for the environment, and for America. It won’t happen in the current lineup because we can’t justify the business case yet. But for future models, we’ll look at it very closely because dealers and customers continue to approach us about it. That pertains not only to the U.S. market, but also to other markets, such as Japan.

Yes, that's pretty much what I figured. They make more margin on them over in Europe, so no need to bring to US. But if we keep hammering on them maybe they'll consider a test market. Let them know we want it!

"Hey ma! The meatloaf! We want it now!"

GM killed the concept of diesel engine in passenger cars 30 years ago which is so sad as modern diesels are so efficient. I would have gone for the SD had it been available in the US when we needed to replace the Jeep. Hopefully there are options for smallish to medium AWD manual diesel vehicles in the US coming in the next few years. 2017 or 2018 model year would work for me.

I think the problem is more that the Euro diesels don't meet Tier2 Bin5 emissions, and getting them there would require big engineering costs that can't be made up with the few years left on the current platform by the time they get to market. It makes a better business sense to engineer the new engines along with the new platforms, and bring them here all at once.

I read Audi was going to offer the A3 TDI in a quattro, but it got axed thinking no one in the USA would pay $32k for a quattro diseal hothatch. A VW dealer I visited when looking at the TDI Jetta Wagon said it soon would be offered in AWD, but, still no sign of it.

Since MINI has not said no to the idea, I hopeful that when the Countryman Coupe comes in 2013 or 2014 maybe there is a chance for a diseal model there. I the idea of a 2 door CMSDA4 is just awesome!

Isn't there someone, like a middleman, who can import one for you for a fee? Or is it illegal and will be stopped at customs? I know it will be expensive, but can it be done?

What about Canada?

The 2014 Euro 6 standard exceeds Teir2 Bin5, so it shouldn't be a problem.

I have a 3/2012 SD All4.
Love the torque in the modern diesels. 143 hp and 305 NM/ 225 lb/ft of torque in the SD. The consumption is a bonus.
In fact, I have only had diesel cars for the last 12 years or so.

A shame there aren't more diesels availiable in the US. You guys are really missing out...

Nice SD, I'm a bit bummed, I ordered my Cooper D in December 2010, at that time the SD had not been announced, I should have waited a couple of months. Anyway I did get one of the first Countrymen in Norway, it was nice having a unique car for a few months, now they are pretty common in Molde.
