R50/53 P0420 & P1072 Running rich but my pockets aren't that deep.
P0420 & p1072.
R53 with 118,000 on the clock. 2nd owner since 2009. Daily driver, mostly highway.
Flow and go Mods: 15 %, CAI, header, Alta Cat back, 380 cc injectors, DT Bypass Valve. Tuned.
“Canned” tune in October 2011, increased some fuel in A/F ratio. Was running stock 330 injectors. Was told cat was clogged, and was overboosting at 17 psi with only 15% pulley.
Two weeks later: Installed new header; running lean at WOT, slight pinging, CEL p0420 (cat running below efficiency, other causes could be faulty 02 sensor or injector), babied the throttle, it was a new header/cat.
Next week: Installed 380 cc injectors, CEL goes away.
Two weeks later, cruising at highway 3200 rpm, CEL comes on, p0420 (same as before), p1072 (system running rich). Tried contacting the tuner, no response…(November 2011)
Continued driving, did not really push the revs.
-March 2012: rough idle- replaced plugs, found plug in cyl 2 loose, despite proper torque specs when installed late 2010. Plug completely fouled. Replaced with NGK JCW plugs from Way. Much smoother idle, no hesitation or hiccups accelerating. NOTICEABLE difference across the board. But CEL still on.
I have been researching the p0420, sorry to bring it up again.
I understand that running rich can be controlled by setting new A/F ratios when I have my r53 retuned at the end of the month. My question remains, Could the cat go bad that soon, within a month of install? Or is this code (p0420) a result of a “canned tune”, followed by larger injectors and will go away with a proper tune once the A/F rations have been properly set.
Or should I replace the 02 sensor after the cat and see if that makes a difference, or both?
Any insight would be cool.
I just don’t want to be treated like crap when I take my car back in for re-tuning with my CEL on.

Yes to the O2 sensor(s). If they haven't been done by 118k it's definitely time.
They're the source of most mixture problems.
Cat should go a lot longer unless you've ben running just massively rich. Easy test is
an IR temp sensor. Compare front and back of cat after warmed up. Back should be
hotter.
I would definitely go with O2 sensors before tuning again.
