Tachometer / Cold Rev Limit display??

So I noticed there are bars going back to like 5500 RPM that appear to be able to be lit up but are not on. This is on a 2003 Cooper S. My friend said his friend's BMW had the lower RPM bars light up when the car is cold and then they de-illuminate as the car warms up... Is this BS or is the car supposed to do this? (Becuase mine doesn't...)

Thanks guys! Been wondering about this for a long time.

Yeah I've never been sure what they're for either. I thought the same thing your friend thought,m but it can't be true because even when my car has sat for a week they don't light up when I go to start it.

The Mini does not have a tach which lights up differently based on engine temp. This is on certain models of BMW, but not the Mini.

I actually started this exact same thread about a month ago after learning M3's do this.

Unfortunately its not an option to have your car this way (I wish it was) but instead its just a universal tach for all MINI models. In other words, those bars that dont light up to 5,500 rpm, light up for the cooper diesels in europe, as that is the redline for the diesel models.

Great question! My new 2005 Justa has the same bars NOT LIT UP, and I have never seen them light, even cold. but the ones from like 6500 or so (I forget right now) are lit all the time. I have been meaning to ask this. Thanks for doing it for me.

The same tack is used in different markets/models (r50,r53, r52, auto, stick, jcw, diseal, and various special editions, such as the GP)
some places got higher rpm limits....(markets)
a tuned car can have the redline moved...and the number of bars lit will change.

Aha! I see I see. Guessing it would have been such an easy thing for them to program the ECU to do the "M3 style" thing too for the Cooper S! Oh well. Thanks for the help guys. I've been wondering about this forever! :D

Yellow/Orange RPM lights

Does anybody know if this would be posible? See the pic attached (Photoshoped image)

A modification to lights for those rpm in orange or yellow that are off until get to the red zone.

¡Gracias!
