Introducing the Shift Rx from TyrolSport

Hello Everyone,

Some of you may have heard of our products or used our services in the past. For those of you who have not, we would like to introduce ourselves to the NAM community. We are TyrolSport, a European car specialty shop located in New York City. We have been in business for 12 years, focusing on performance products and upgrades for VW/Audi/Porsche/Mini/BMW. Our revolutionary Mini products include our R56 Front Mount Intercooler and R50/R53 Rigid Caliper Sliders. We are now introducing a new member to our product line, the R56 Shift Rx.

TyrolSport strives to set itself apart from other products in the marketplace. Our Billet Shortshifter holds true to this philosophy, and once again our R&D team has delivered. Our design goals for the Shift Rx were the following:

1. Develop the highest quality product by using CAD development and modernized production processes

2. Create a short shifter that is easy to install using simple hand tools without a lift

3. Modify the shift feel as well as decreasing the shift throw

4. Allow for the modification to be easily reversible

5. Manufacture, prototype and final production components utilizing 100% American labor and materials

Our design process spanned two years, and included numerous prototypes of different design, construction, and function. Our design incorporated a water-jetted spline for our new shifter, which fits with greater precision than anything we could have in a casting (and even better than the OEM part!). In addition, the simpler two dimensional shift arm further empowered the engineering team to feature a dual-adjustable fulcrum by creating dual stud locations for end user adjustment.

Features from the final prototype include a through-cut TyrolSport logo as well as a hard-black anodizing to ensure years of corrosion resistance and quality appeal. The included lift-lever is laser cut 303 stainless steel and is assembled in-house at our shop in New York City.

The results:

20 minute installation

Adjustable 15% or 40% shift throw reduction

Motorsport inspired shift feel

Street and track tested

Created, prototyped and manufactured in the USA

The TyrolSport ShiftRx fits every manual transmission equipped Cooper and Cooper S R55, R56, R57 up until 8/2009 production

The TyrolSport Shift Rx is now in production. We will be organizing an introductory sale as soon as our production kits arrive

Do you have instructions available? I'm curious to see the process.

Thanks for the reply. To answer your question, the shifter bolts onto the transmission and replaces the factory part. This is accessed by removing the 8mm screw holding down the coolant expansion tank. Once this is rolled out of the way, the intake snorel is also removed (tube from front grille to air box). With the snorkel out, it is a matter of swapping over the cables and factory parts .

Directions are not yet publicized as the images do not contain the final production piece (only difference is the black anodizing and through-cut logo).

Well keep us informed. I have the CravenSpeed short shifter installed, but I'd be interested in adding this as well if I could shorten it up a bit more. And 20 min install sounds nice after 3-4 hours for the short shifter (and the accompanying sore back muscles from lying under the car).

The development of an equivelant product for the R53 would not be able to support as easy of an install as on the R56. The need for an R53 shifter has been considered, but at this time it is more economical to install an "in-console" short shifter.

I need something, the white plastic bit that holds the pivot point on my shift lever is cracked. allowing excess movement and rough nasty feeling shifts.

just read the directions

no mention of lubing the parts on assembly

this looks like an area that should be lubed?

if so what is recommended?

Thats an excellent question Scott.
The OE parts are not lubricated. In an effort to reduce the physical wear of the parts, we do not want to lubricate any of the cable endlinks or the sliding mechanism as lubricants do attract dirt and grime, and cause the moving parts to wear themselves down over time.
All of our shifter prototypes have been tested for over two years in all kinds of conditions (we are in the heart of the salt belt in NY). Our parts still fit like new .

I was going to order, but now it says "Call for price". Are you out of stock already?

You mentioned FMIC in the first post--any chance of an intercooler for the Countryman?

We are not out of stock, we ran into a road block after discovering a mid-production shift in the OEM piece that ours replaces. At this time, the TyrolSport ShiftRx is only compatible with cars built up to 8/2009.

We are working on a revision for cars built after 8/2009, due to changes in the shift selector on top of the transmission. Apologies for the hype, but we are working on having this up as soon as possible.

On the intercooler, it should be compatible with the Countryman, but it has not yet been tested. The test data will remain very accurate, just the fit has yet to be confirmed. If there are any NYC area testers, this may be a good opportunity to receive a heavily discounted FMIC should all fit well

Any update on the short shifter?

Were you able to find out if your FMIC fits the R60?

We have not yet confirmed fitment on the FMIC.
On the shifter, we have a new design on the drawing board. Our new challenge is to design a tool that will either be available as part of the kit or as a free loan, to remove the roll pin holding the stock shifter on the trans.
Updates will follow

There will be no other modifications necessary. This is a 100% reversible install, and will be priced at $219 alongside the early style (07-09) short shifter
