Still, I love that Seinfeld episode where they try to drive as long as possible on Empty!!!

What is the most gas you have ever put into your R53?

Last week, I put in 13.911 gallons. I think that's the most I have ever put in the car.

I'm sure it's not healthy for the car but it happens sometimes..

Bentlley states a Cooper /S fuel tank at 50 l. or 13.2 US gal. with a reserve tank of 8 l. or 2.1 US gal. So, if totally dry, (not recommended) you might squeeze in 15.3 US gal. The fuel acts as a fuel pump coolant keep it fueled!

I've posted this info. before and had people say the reserve is included in the 13.2 figure and then go on to state how they got 14+ US gallons in their tanks !!!!!!

I'll stick with the Bentley numbers and leave the top fueling award to others.

 

That is supposed to be 13.2 gal including a reserve of 2.1 gal. There is no reserve tank - it just means at 2.1 gal left over, you get the low fuel warnings.


I put 48.5 L into my JCW on the first fill up - so I guess I had 1.5 L left.

I keep track of this sort of mileage thing, and somehow on my justa Cooper I managed to put in just over 50 L one day and 52 L on another day... Not sure how I managed to go over the 50 L limit.

 

You didn't go over the limit! If you had you would be standing in fuel!

I'll leave it up to you to figure out how you got 52 litres in a 50 litre tank!!!!

If you can't trust the MINI user manual what can you trust? Either that or I am getting ripped off at the pump!

I suspect MINI put incorrect info in the manual to help prevent road side assistance expenses due to clients running out of fuel...

 

Can probably fit a bit more than 50 into it by filling it all the way up to the cap you know up the tube that feeds into the tank...not sure about another 2 liters though haha

 

14.2 US gallons

 

I've hit 14 gallons several times. Of course, with the Mini's needle-less gas gauge, you can't really go "below" E.

Or can you?

 

14.078 gal just the other day (2009 MC)...and I might have been able to squeeze a wee bit more in there (another tenth?)...

The previous high, which I thought was running on fumes, was 13.3-something...so this 14.078 shocked me.

The trip computer was saying I was down to 16 miles range....I had one "bar" still lit on the gas gauge.

 

After running out, I put 14.52 gallons in, and the computer still said there was 3 miles to go.

 

This discussion has been bandied about elsewhere on several occasions. I've said it before, it is always better to burn off the top half of a tank than the bottom, that's pilot talk for not falling out of the sky. Next time you are visiting with your shop guy, ask about the cost of replacing a fuel pump then reconsider how cute it is to run your tank to near empty then lol all you want.

 

I don't know what causes the pump to stop, but I think different stations have different methods, some of which may allow the fuel neck to be filled.

I was first shocked by this with my Jeep. I often play a little game where I try to predict the price of the gas when the pump stops, but one day, the price went way higher than expected. When I started up the truck, the needle went almost an eighth of a tank past full. Since then, I've noticed that some stations will regularly fill past full while others will stop automatically at the needle. I asked around a bit since I was trying to do some mpg calculations and found that the fuel neck can hold about a gallon or so of extra fuel.

This must also be true for Minis, since I can also fill past full with my 06' MCS, but because second gen Minis don't have a needle, you may not be able to tell if you got extra gas or not.

 

I get too paranoid when the needle hits the point where I know the light is about to come on. I always make sure I am near a gas station when I know I'm near that time, just cuz, like I said, I get so paranoid that I'll run out of the gas on the freeway :P

I usually fill up around 11 gallons, before the light even comes on. With the light on, I think I've filled up about 12.

 

Every tank for 10 years I have run down to "- - -" range, below 0 miles to empty, and 40+ miles after that. The engine only died of fuel starvation once, 100 yards from a gas station. Most fuel put in, 15 gallons. Average amount put in is 13 to 14 gallons. I stop the pump at the first click.

The last time I put gas in was 13.82.

 

I've had my OBC showing 2 miles to go to empty and put 14.2 and some change in the tank.

Had the urge to drive around the gas station parking lot until I had the OBC to zero and keep going to see how much the computer is off by. Won't have to experiment now, Nabeshin has done it for me.

I even turned off the radio and blower to save gas. Had it been daylight, the savings from no headlights would have gotten me there.

2 mile range? You can go around for another few days on that. Of course that is based on driving style, and I would venture to guess that my computer has learned to display range differently having gone down to 0 so often.

I'm trying to remember precisely but I believe the engine died after going nearly 70 miles after 0. It was mostly highway driving so that makes a bit of sense, with the 2 gallons not read by the computer's range. Works out to be something like 35mpg. I was hypermiling it pretty good towards the end.

I walked to the gas station to buy a 1 gallon jug and gas, after priming the pump the car started just fine. Getting to the gas station I filled up to about 14.2 or .3.

I got very close to running out many other times based on this, having filled up 14-15 gallons numerous times.

 

Haha, it looks like a sport to you, I'd never run my car that long, just because I don't have to you and the shitty feeling you get when running out

The big problem with satire (which I take very seriously, BTW) and sarcasm (which isn't usually very nice) is that it is lost on a large percentage of those at whom it is aimed most directly.
