So you pop the bolster down -- it rotates on the bottom axis. The rotation appears to be due to 3 clips which extend into the platic plate behind it. Both end clips are easily removed from their spots, but the center clip on my car is attached quite securely. It appears to be shaped like a hook. When I put a little pressure on the bolster to try to remove it, the piece behind the bolster flexes....

Does the thing pop out? If so, which position should the bolster be in? (up or down?) It appeared that up was better from what I could feel.

Yes, I've read the howto at http://www.bridger.us/mini, but there is inadequate description there.

Yes, the center clip pops out like the end ones. It is the same shape but bent in the opposite direction to the end ones.
I held the part so it was basically horizontal and pulled straight back. It took quite a bit of pressure. Good luck.
