Why is dismantling center stack required to remove toggle cover?!

I've been reading through the rear-fog retrofit threads and can't for the life of me understand why it's necessary to remove so many dash pieces just so you can remove the toggle switch cover and insert a new toggle. As I look at the diagram for the cover, it just seems to be press fit into the A/C controller. Can't it just be pried off (even if it breaks, you're about to install a new one anyhow). I would think that monkeying with all those trim pieces is just inviting a rattle problem down the road.

What am I missing?

Yes, you can just pry it off. Use a plastic tool so you don't mar the console to depress the two tabs at the top and pull it straight out. It is a pain to line up the lower rails putting it back in though, but very doable. Just take your time and don't force it.

+1 Did this on the bench, but could have easily done it in the car.

I will try this over the weekend. I don't really care if I break the old faceplate since I have a new one -- I just don't want one of those little tabs to break off and fall inside the console

Thanks -- that's a great photo. Hopefully I can get those tabs to bend a bit or I'll be eating crow. Just have to figure out what type of tool to use. I'm thinking about my radio keys -- they're very thin metal affairs used to pull DIN head units.

Honestly, I used a small 'hook' from a pick set I picked up from Home Depot for $2.00 (was on a j-hook on a isle somewhere) Hooked under one end and pulled the clips loose at once. After that, it just slipped off. I wasn't real gentle, but I also wasn't trying to save any of it.

I did the same thing other than hooking the two outer rings to prevent any scratches.
