Stripped Lugnut Threads

While changing my 2007 MCS from summer wheels/tires to my winter set today, I inadvertently crossthreaded one lugbolt on the right rear wheel, then tightened it. Result was stripped threads in the hub. Would appreciate advice on how best to correct this damage.

Tapping the stripped threadhole and inserting a Helicoil seems the most obvious solution to me. Is this a procedure which can readily be accomplished at home, or should I take the car to a professional mechanic or machine shop? What are the thread size and specs for the R56 lugbolts? I have never attempted a Helicoil repair before, so would be grateful for tips/guidance from those who have done such procedures. Thanks.

Well, I hope you learned a lesson...

The thread size is 14mm x 1.25.

Yes, you probably can use a Helicoil or a Timesert, but the kits, (drill bit, insert, installation tool) run about $60-$160... So for a 1 time use, it's probably better to take it to a competent shop.

If you really buggered it up a new hub/bearing cost about $240+ install.

Carefully retap the threadhole (no helicoil) and that should fix your problem, unless the rammed the cross threaded lug bolt to the bottom. Most likely the damaged threads are only in the top 1/4 or 1/3 of the bolt hole.
