R50/53 Electrical issues....
Electrical issues....
Hey guys, a bunch of electrical issues just cropped up, and I was wondering if anyone had any answers for me or if you could lead me in the right direction.
1. Passenger headlight has been the first to blow, about every 6 months, and I just had the passenger tail light blow a week before it blew again this time. Could be the Sylvania headlights I'm using, and could be that the tail light was about to go anyway, since I haven't had to replace any of the tails since stock in '02.
2. Headlights were intermittently turning OFF completely, for any amount of time, at any random time, so dealer replaced the turn signal stalk, which included the switches inside, and that fixed the issues.
3. RPM Gauge has been f***ing up a LOT lately, and when I was on the highway doing 60 in 6th the gauge was at above 10,000 RPM, as depicted in the image below. The gauge also 'acted' like a speedometer every morning from a cold start, i.e. the needle would rise at the same rate as the needle on the speedometer.... VERY strange.

Anyway, I have been wondering if all of these issues could be related to one thing. Is that possible, and what is that one thing? The dealer wants to charge me $900 to replace the gauge. $400 I have to pay, and $450 my 3rd party warranty would cover. This seems OUTRAGEOUS considering that the part costs $360 ($300 of which the warranty is covering). That leaves almost $500 for labor???????
Anyway, please let me know what you guys think could be causing all of this stuff to malfunction all at the same time.

another of the speedometer when the car is on. note that it's not showing red line lighting which should be red, or the temperature: (car idling from cold start, RPM normal)

and a video of when the tach thought it was a speedo: http://youtu.be/jQmwPxvKBf4
(I guess it's not possible to embed video on vbulletin)

In what sorta time frame did these events occur ?
Could be just individual component issues due to age/use. Could be when the stalk was replaced, something else with the tach's wiring/connector happened when it was disconnected for that repair ?
Maybe check the fuse box by your foot well, fuse box in engine compartment and other pin connections in the engine bay area for corrosion ?

If you find the tachometer is the problem and have to replace it, buy the part, maybe used here on NAM and replace it yourself. It takes all of 5 minutes, a couple of screws and one plug in connector. I had mine out when I installed my aux. gauges.
Gray, everything happened within 2 months. First the stalk went, then the RPM gauge, then the tail light, then the headlight. (I had previously replaced a headlight 6 months ago)
36--I considered that, I know how easy it is since I've done it, but the only issue is that they dealer is telling me that the gauge "NEEDS" to be programmed for my car. I don't know if that really makes any sense....... Also I found a gauge on eBay for $75, not sure if I should buy it..

Had the same hat trick (not including the e-brake light) this spring, had to replace a rotation sensor. Check to make sure one hasn't been knocked loose. You don't say what year or model which makes a difference.
