R50/53 Hood Scoop Service Bulletin
Picked up my MCS from Mini of North Scottsdale today to install v36. My service advisor pointed out that my hood scoop was coming loose and rattling.
I know I'd read something on here about the scoop coming off, but I didn't know that MINI had an active bulletin for it. Sorry if this has already been posted.
Here's what it said on my work order:
Hood assy rattles and there is an open campaign M4120003
72 - Accessories, Body
1058 CM
07-13-0-024-161 NUT
Qty 2
Hope this helps

Just checked mine and guess what - missing (1) out of (2) nuts that hold the front of the scoop in place. The remaining nut was very lose and about to go.
The scoop was not rattling. The only clue was to tug on it. It is very loose.
Build date 11/02.

I believe that there are actually 3 service campaigns related to hoods:
1) Under-hood insulation (needs replacing due to fire hazzard)
2) Hood scoop missing bolts, needs tightening
3) Hood rubs on leading edges (needs adjustment and touch-up paint)
Unfortunately, I don't have precise descriptions or build-dates effected. My 7/02 build MCS needed #s 2 and 3 and received this at its last scheduled service. I'm assuming that they checked for #1 and I didn't need it as my dealer (MINI of Peabody) is very proactive and always tells me about these things before I even hear about them on NAM!

This might be a stupid question but is there anyplace that the service bulletins are posted? I know you can look up recalls, but I've never heard of a place to check up on service bulletins.
I don't trust my dealership to be pro-active about ANYTHING so there could be scores of service bulletins that apply to my car (7/03 build) and I'd never know about them.
Hate my dealer.

Here here! (I could call mine today regarding the "stumble" issue and they would still sound surprised...)
How timely, this topic. I just noticed last weekend that my scoop is nut-less. At least, the fore portion of the scoop--I couldn't tell if there were any rear screws, and I was too busy forgetting to replace my oil fill cap to be too concerned

Some may find this amusing, but what the heck...they've been nice to us lately.... Call MINIUSA? I'm sure that they can look up such info on your car based on your providing the VIN.
(OK MINIDivision, don't prove me wrong on this one...

Last week, while adding washer fluid, I looked up and saw that the two rear mounted nuts were missing from my hood scoop. $0.54 later all is well. Maybe this should have been a warranty claim.
p.s. Thanks to Agro and the power of NAM forums, I now have two hood scoops, my standard IB for normal use, and an aspen white one for when I'm feeling frisky.

Thanks for the heads up. I have an August '02 build.......just checked and both scoop bolts are missing although I haven't noticed a rattle. I already have had to have the hood adjusted.......will ask about the insulation. 'preciate it!
Here is one of the original threads. At the end MINIDivision responds. Maybe this became the source for the bulletin.

OK... but I haven't seen anyone say yet what size the nut is !?
i met up with another NAM memeber yesterday for some driving and while checking out my engine he mentioned he had the hood scoop problem. Looked up at mine, and sure enough, missing some nuts!
I just want to run into the hardware store and pick up the nuts and some loc-tite... that should solve it.
Thanks,
Speedy

WARNING!! Do not apply permanent loc-tite (red) because the bolts that attach the hood scoop to the hood are only held in place by weak plastic attachments on the scoop itself. If you apply permanent or even medium strength loc-tite, I believe that you will crack the plastic retention pieces before you come close to breaking the loc-tite seal.
A set of lock washers would be a much better option, IMO.

I'm not sure of the size nut off the top of my head but it is the same size as the nuts holding on the headlight assembly. Don't forget washers also. I had extras off a headlight replacement that fit perfectly.

I discovered the missing nuts on the hood scoop about six months ago... also noticed at the same time that most of the screws holding the insulation under the bonnet were loose. Tightened all that were there, then brought her to the dealer to replace the missing nuts. All has been well since.
Check ALL the screws under the bonnet for loosivity!

I tried to find the bulletin on the hood rattle, but could only find this one. If anyone wants to know if there is an open campaign on their car please feel free to contact me and I'll try to look it up.

Body
M41 200 03
7/1/2003
Subject:
Paint Damaged Under Hood
Complaint
Some MINI owners may complain that the paint in the area of the hood strikers is damaged.
Cause
Movement of the hood against the seal on the top of the radiator shroud can eventually rub through the paint on the underside of the hood.
Measure
Protective shields, part numbers 51 48 7 126 245/246, have been developed to prevent this paint damage.
If the paint has been worn through to bare metal, touch up the affected area with zinc based brushable primer.
Remove the screw from the expanding plastic pin that secures the hood pad on both sides. Remove the white plastic strip from the double-sided tape on the shields and install the shields between the hood pad and the hood, pressing the double sided tape firmly into place. Reinstall the expanding pins and screws.
