Dealer Scotchguard - yay/nay?

Hi All,

Just ordered my MCSC and got all the info on the maintenance packages, among which was the interior/exterior scotchguard deal. I'm not concerned about the exterior but I got leather seats so want to protect them as much as possible - any thoughts, feeback or experience with this?

Thanks in advance -

I'd say nay - this stuff is pure profit for the dealer. Keep the leather clean and soft with Lexol products or something similar. You should however invest in a clear bra for the front or you'll soon have a lot of friendly little reminders that you should have.

If its the resistall package then no way! I was suckered into it when I got mine. Its a total rip off it sound like a great deal, but its not.

For the carpets, buy a can of scotchguard at the hardware store and do that part yourself for a few bucks. on the clear bra, find an independent to do that. Stay as far away as possible from drive thru car washes and anything that says armorall. Hand wash asap, clay bar (deceptively easy to do) and a couple of coats of quality carnuba wax 2 or 3 times a year and keep a California duster handy at all times.

What many don't know/consider is the way this scheme works. The dealer takes in $X for the service and pays an insurance underwriter. Then when there is a stain they can't remove, they file a claim and the insurer pays out. You're not paying (say) $500 for stain protection that will guarantee they remove any stain, you're paying $495 for insurance with a hefty profit margin and $5 for a spray-on stain protector. The same holds true for the paint protection etc. They bank on people not bothering to file claims so the underwritten cost is low and margin high. Run away.

Can't use scotch guard on leather and if you have carpet mats instead of the rubber one just buy a can of scotch guard and spray them. This is one dealer option everyone says is a ripoff and it is.
