Drivetrain Exhaust Idea
Exhaust Idea
Is there any reason we cannot do a dual setup with 2 straight through mufflers with built in tips and just simple piping?
I do not have my car yet so I am just basing this on pictures I have seen.
Similar attached muffler. Tip 4" tip removable silencer, overall body length 12" overall diameter 5".
With tip sticking out through the trim is there enough room under there to get 12" of muffler and a 90 degree pipe bend? It looks like the 5" OD body will fit just fine.
Really what I want to know is how much room is there from the stock tip end to where the 90 degree bend would have to be?
The loaner I have is a 2wd and there is a massive area available for a system, but I'm interested in All4 measurements.

Yeah....I'm chomppin at the bit to start modding it and its not here yet. I would rather build my own than buy off the shelf. Of course off the shelf is tested and proven to work but I get pride out of building my own bits.
I don't want the typical civic low slung fart pipe sound and look but I think this my work done carefully and tucked up nicely. The option of a removable silencer appeals to me.

You might be able to make it fit, but you may have to get creative. One of our members took pictures of the underside: https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...y.php/cat/3666
Yep, if you're going custom, it's all up in the air. Look at the pics that have been shared here, and you'll get a great idea of spacing concerns, etc. Don't kill your ground clearance with a muffler - you can easily use bullet mufflers and not have them hang down at all.
If it helps, I'm going to be hacking the entire system off on Friday (I'm making a post about it as we speak).
I'm going to try to take sound clips at every cut so you guys can get an idea of what to cut and what to leave!

I was under my car installing mud flaps this morning, and I definitely think there's room for the setup you're talking about. The only thing that's really in the way are the hangers for the stock muffler.

Keep in mind that if you run out of room, you can use smaller 'mufflers' like the 8" Cherry Bombs. They're just small resonators. I don't think a tip + 12" + 90 degree pipe bend is going to fit, and I've been under mine for an hour today. 8" might make it.
The muffler you originally put up is a bit too JDM for my taste... I feel like it will end up sounding like a JDM Honda, which it sounds like you're not going for.
The cheapest catback made for our cars is the Borla, which is just over $600. You can weaigh that decision in your planning. Also, that catback doesn't touch the resonator or 2nd cat. If you're looking to remove wither of those, you're better off doing it on your own for sure.

Here's a better way to go about helping you...
What would you like to accomplish? Louder? Lower (bassy)? Raspy? Popping?
It's kind of hard to get an idea of what you want out of your car before having it for a bit, driving it, etc. You get an idea of what it's missing. I modded the hell out of my car (and it's still going on day by day) before deciding to do the exhaust (and you see I'm still developing a plan in my latest thread).
Just a suggestion, of course, and not meant to be anything other than friendly advice!

Yeah I hate the fart can sound, I'm just throwing out ideas to get opinions. Good and bad. I don't like the JDM look either...not classy enough...lol
The muffler I posted is just to give the idea. I was actually looking at some short Borla mufflers, but with the cost it would be better just to buy their system or a VIP setup.
I tossed aroung the Magnaflow....they make a crossflow muffler that has a inlet and outlet on one end and one outlet on the other. Basically the one they use in their system for the CM.
I want some performance gains along with a little more sound. I do have 2 boys under 4 in the back so it can't be too loud.

Please dont use a muffler like that. Try to find something made by a well-known manufacture of mufflers.
Again.. I dont get what you are trying to accomplish here.. if its not a downpipe you arent gaining power.
More useless noise.. why not just wait a little while for a good company to actually create a proper exhaust for your car.. ugh.
Your car.. not mine. But I would do it right. Dont use those stupid cheap mufflers.. we are made by BMW here lol.

I've run Dynomax mufflers on all my other cars and really liked the sound- and none of them have ever suffered the dreaded drone. If you are building your own system piece by piece, it might be worth a look.. That' All!....
Tom, I'll get you some sound clips when I get my install done on Friday/Saturday.
That might give you a better idea of what you'd like to do. If it works well, you might just end up doing what I did, keeping the factory muffler and adding tips.
I've used Dynomax in the past (on LS1s and LS2s), but I'm not sure the sound would work for our 1.6T. I thought about using one instead of the Magnaflow, but... if you've heard one, I don't think you'd want to use a race bullet. The 4" Magnaflow I'm using is about as bullet-ey as you'd want.
Also, look at threar's post with the VIP ALL4 exhaust install for a video clip. That system also removes the 2nd cat and res and replaces the muffler in the rear.
When does your Countryman come in? If it's a while from now, there may be even newer products (like the Magnaflow catback) since SEMA is in only 2 weeks from today.

Valid point.
Don't get hung up on the picture. Its just one I ripped off google images to give people an idea of the size and if there is room in that area to get a similar shape muffler in there and just have the tip exposed, not draging the ground like a old Nissan 240...lol This will be a company car so I have to keep it clean and nice looking.
Any mods I do will be documented with a dyno run at my friends shop after each install.
There are no emission laws in my neck of the woods so my options are open.
CM was due 4 weeks ago, but got pushed back. Looks like its done production...just waiting for a ride over the pond. Then we are having a bunch of company decal/tinting etc done before we take delivery. The dealer here is top shelf and has been easy to deal with.

We get hammered out here for emissions, but not nearly as bad as California, I'm sure.
Well a safety inspection includes a look for a cat and muffler, but no sniff test or none of that jazz. The muffler and cat deal is not even a issue, I had my Cummins ram inspected and it had a full 4" exhaust turbo back and a Donaldson muffler. Its not an issue here.....yet.
Google trr countryman. it is the best exhaust ive seen or heard for the countryman. check out the youtube clip, you will not be dissapointed. i just cannot find any distibutors for trr products.
Not really my thing, but you might like the sound because it has a different downpipe.
Honestly, that's not much different than factory sounding with a little more catless rasp. You could easily build your own if you liked that sound - much cheaper than importing!

Well, i guess exhaust sound is a very personal preferance "that would explain the honda's that sound like gas weedeaters/chainsaws". I personally do not like hearing the popping sounds from the VIP, Scorpion, countryman connection or JCW exhausts. The supersprint exhaust system sounds good. i would be interested in a magnaflow sound clip.Does the popping sound coming from the sport buttom? The popping sounds like something is wrong with the car. Kinda like the car is trying to backfire, which would embarrass me in a new car made by BMW.

The popping sound is on JCWs and S models with the Sport button engaged.
In fact, the popping comes from unspent fuel being pushed into the exhaust system.
Remember that Mini has a stong racing and rally heritage, and that popping is very much a part of the brand on the S and JCW side of things. Many of us adore it. When we're able to tune the 2011s, I'll be sure to add in more pop/burble just as the JCW tune does.
But, as you said, it's very subjective!
