Oil changes

I just bought a 2011 mini s and understand i don't need to have it serviced for one year. I'm a bit uneasy with this as I typically like to do this at least every 5 thousand miles.

Any thoughs on this?

Also, I have close to 4k on it now and it "looks" as though the oil may be a bit low. is this normal for the break in period?

You should be uneasy; a lot of engine component failures have been attributed to low / excessive use oil.
Changing it out 5K miles is a very very smart move for longterm ownership.

I currently change my 2009 every 4K without question.

How low?
Consumption is attributed to break in, where the piston rings seat into the engine block and oil vapor through the PCV system.
BMW / Mini "allowable" consumption rate is approximately 1 quart for every 1000 miles... excessive to some, but tolerable to the manufacturer.

I want to say its about half-way on the stick. Not too bad but... As you said feel its mostly due to break-in and settleing.

I sure wish they can make these dip sticks easier to read!!

Thanks for being my sanity check

Change and check your oil frequently in these French Engines.......seems to be the ounce of prevention for them.

Especially important to always keep it topped off.
