As long as the CEL does not flash, yes it's safe to drive.
Since it's so new, it's adventaeous to send it back to the dealer to perform the tests / diagnostics under warranty.
If you want, you can head to a local auto store, borrow their OBDII generic scanner and see what fault codes are present.
Record those, and post back your exact fault code numbers...

I had the same issue with my 2011 and had to take to dealer for a fault sensor. Repaired under warranty. It is an hour and a half journey for me, so I agree sux to have to go back so soon. Mine happened with less than 7000 miles on it
* Mini DTC P0442 - EVAP Emission Control System (small leak) Leak Detected
Well, the EVAP leak could be as easy as a non-sealing gas cap to a crack in the EVAP vacuum lines.
Most EVAP problems don't after car performance, but it does affect gas mileage as the leak allows gasoline vapors to escape.

I am taking my 2011 back to the dealer tomorrow. I have had 3 check engine so far. The first one could have been that I forgot to tighten the filler cap. The second one went away on its own after several days. The recent one went away by itself the next day. While I am at the dealer, I am going to have them check why the speaker makes a loud pop sound once in a long while. Several 2011 owners who have the HK stereo have this problem.
I have the same problem and instead of the fuel cap ended been the premium gas I was using. For some reason my clubman doesn't like Phillips (probably the additives they use) which I use on my wife's car
Mice built nest ontop of fuel pump and chewed a tiny hole in what appeared to be part of the plastic casting (alittle tit). The dealer fix was a new pump $600.
Since I had driven the car 1000 mi in that condition and after seeing the damage I thought about my father-in law a (great mechanic) and what would he do.He would improvise of course!
After talking to the tech and from what I seen the hole was pluged cel turned off after another 1000 mi no cel no gas smell.paid $75 and was on my way.
Got lots of mice traps on hand.

As posted on another thread (that no one responded to) My engine lite came on my 2011 and I had it checked. Found the following codes;
2947---coolant temp sensor
29dc---charge air sensor
2c58---charge air pressure
Cleared the codes and hoping for the best.

Did you take it to dealer?should be covered .Mine was due to mice as I stated not covered under warranty
I was driving yesterday doing some Christmas shopping and guess what? I see the check engine light in the dash, I don't know if it was there when I started the car but it just came on out of no wehere. I put little over 5100 miles on my 2012 clubman S and it went to the dealer this morning to be checked thoroughly. I noticed louder than usual fan noise when I stop the engine so the dealer is looking at the check engine and fan noise, they will call me with the finding later today.

I have the same problem when my 2011 Mini Cooper S Clubman was about 2,000 miles. I had it checked at the dealer and end up the thermostat was changed.
Many owners experienced the same problem. I think the thermostat is not in good quality.

Thanks UAL_Kingpin and Danielng0811, you guys were both right about the coolant sensor and thermostat, the dealer found the faulty coolant temp sensor and replaced thermostat and added 2 litters of coolant. The fan noise is back to normal
My engine light came on and they found out codes 2947 and 3786(recall). I have a 2011 with 52K. Im out of basic warranty. However I have an extended powertrain warranty is this covered? And what about the recall?
I would call the extended warranty place first and see if its covered.
Its was a TSB for the sensor dependent on the model , call your local dealership and see it its covered.

Super old thread but a lot of 2011's S models had faulty temp sensors.
BossyR56 your car should still be covered under warranty to fix those problems. I had our temp sensor replaced at 5k and just recently at 42k miles under warranty.
