R50/53 Fuel gauge is acting up

Fuel gauge is acting up
I filled the car up two days ago and the gauge worked initially. Then after an hour or so parked I fired it up and the fuel gauge showed empty. Drove 30 miles and parked it for 15 mins and then it worked again. The next morning it read empty again. What gives? Bad sending unit?
