Damn parking garage hard water stains
Damn parking garage hard water stains
Just returned from 1 week in India, and had left my car at the Logan airport in Boston. Prior to leaving on my trip, I had just placed an application of Prima's new Hydro Shield on the car, and it was looking mighty shiny.
When I returned from India, i guess there had been a couple of days of significant rain fall, as I saw lots of "grey" water spots all over the hood and windshield. Not sure how the car got lots of spots, since it was on the 5th of 6th floors, but it did.
When I got the car home, I gave it a quick washing with some mytique, and saw that the water spots were very pronounced, and looking nasty on my car's blue paint.
I next tried one of the solutions I had found here many moons ago, about placing a vinegar soaked towel on the car, and letting it sit for a while. While this slightly lessened the stains, they were still very visible.
Next step was to pull out the Claybar. I used Griots speedshine as the lubricant, and performed a light clay job over the entire hood of the car. The scary thing, is I could hear the clay going across the stains!
In the end, there was further reduction in the stains, but most were all still clearly visible. I went back with the Clay, and this time focused on 2-4 sq inches, applying what was probably too much pressure, and the stains finally started to disappear. After doing this for about 30 minutes, I was tired and frustrated, as many of the stains were still visible. I was running out time that I had available for detailing activities, and had come to the conclusion that I will need to use finish or swirl next weekend with a PC to get the paint corrected.
Never had I seen such nasty water stain damage in such a short time.

At least water spots do not total your car. Just last week a big hailstorm went through Omaha and totaled many cars at the airport.

Mother Nature knows no bounds... damn that sucks, I hate hard water stains. There was a leak in my buildings garage last year and I had that same problem. Luckily only a night passed when I noticed it. If you ever had to park again at that lot, obviously pick a different spot or use a cover but you will need locking tie downs to deter thieves.
