Suspension Koni Yellow Sport Shocks adjustment setting
Koni Yellow Sport Shocks adjustment setting
Owners, what do you have your Koni yellows set on. NM told me a half turn up from soft in back and a quarter turn in front. Also what springs are you using? NM, TSW ???
Koni Yellow's
Hi,
I have a 06 MCS with Koni Yellow Sports and the Ultrik springs for Minimania. I've had the springs on the car since 09 and put the Yellows on the car in May of this year. When I replaced the shocks and struts I had 95k on the car so if I put on Monroes the car would have felt better. Surprisingly enough the original shocks and struts were not as bad as I was anticipating. Don't get me wrong they were shot but still had some pressure to them.
As far as the settings go it really up to your personal preference. I have been playing with the adjustments since I put them in. Only recently have I taken the time to change the rear adjustments just because you have to pull them to adjust.
When I put the Koni's in the car I set the rears at 50% and started the fronts at 75%. 2 full revolutions on the adjustment **** from soft to firm give or take a some play. So for the rears I started at soft and did one full revolution which is 50% and the fronts I did one and a half revolutions from soft to firm to end up at 75%. This setting wasn't bad, yes what a difference this set up made on my car, night and day in handling from the stockers but its the finite settings that have really amazed me. The smallest adjustments make huge differences. At my starting point, depending on what you are looking for out of the ride of the vehicle, this setting was very comfortable to me in the city and on the highway. Much more stiff then the originals, but again, comfortable to me. I've gone 50/50 and great for the highway and the city, big difference from 50/75. I've done the 50/25 again rear/front and this was more like the OEM feeling but still more stiff. Vibrations and rattles fell of quite a bit at this point. Now that I've started to adjust the rear settings along with the fronts it's a completely different car. All I have done is adjusted the rears at 75% to firm and set the fronts at 75% to firm so 75/75. Mind you, I still have the stock rear sway bar but with this setting, WOW, absolutely amazed with the handling. The understeer....gone, pushed hard enough I can get it to oversteer. I can't imagine what it would be like with a 22mm rear sway bar installed.
As far as the ride goes, for my personal preference, fun for a day or two around the city, fun for a minute on the highway and thats it. To me, 75/75 is stiff. If you like to feel everything in the road, great setting. If you want to hear your wife, girlfriend, mom *****, great setting. Like I said, I love it, just not for everyday use.
I'm having a great time playing with the tuning and I have a ton more settings to explore. It all comes down to your personal preference.

I have koni yellows sport suspension kit, its on FIRM. maybe too stiff for some people but not the driver, passenger will feel most of the bumps
during the winter i have it on half with winter tires.

With stock and most mild lowering springs, Just off the soft stop is a good starting place.
You probably can't get enough spring to warrant full firm, no matter what MiniTS--05 says... His car would probably handle better if he backed off the rebound damping, (probably a lot...lol)

Just finished putting on H&R springs and Koni adjustables. I dialed in a half-turn both back and front, but have too few miles yet to draw any conclusions, especially since it's been so wet.

widmerpool, so what Koni settings you end up with? did you do much trial-and-error tuning? i am looking to get take understeer out of the car (without going for crazy, tire chewing camber) and since i'll have similar set up to yours, i thought i'd ask. thx, Alex
Alex, I left the rears at the factory setting and set the fronts a half-turn stiffer. I have several thousand miles and feel no reason to mess with those adjustments. I have dialed out understeer by the brute force method of a solid 22mm rear bar set on full stiff. The car rotates!

I know the original post is older, but just FYI for others who may find this thread - NEVER run the Koni Sports on FULL firm. The shocks will blow out quickly. If you want to run them firm, tune the **** all the way to the firmest setting, then back it down at least 1/4 turn.
I increased mine to a full turn front and back and cranked H-Sport 19mm RSB to full stiffest setting for VIR HPDE two weekends ago. The extra half turn took a lot of jiggle motions out of the ride. It was so great I think one and a half turns might be the charm.
The nice thing about the Koni Sport fronts is that it is simple to adjust them once installed from under the hood at the shock tower. It's easy to experiment. I would recommend starting at maybe 1/4 turn from full soft and keep going up until it feels right to you.
Aight thanks Buddy... I have a question for anyone that knows... I'm only installing the two front koni yellows.... no springs or anything else, is this link going to be helpful or is this something else?

2) In the mean time you can adjust it with a) a small vice grip pliers if you do it very carefully or b) a very tiny socket wrench can work too.
