our Mini's sun roof refused to open even in Seattle's not so hot spring weather. We took the car to a local mini dealer for a check. The service rep of course tried to act dumb by saying that he wasn't aware of this issue. Anyways.. they checked and tried to apply oil/grease to the hinges. It worked for a few weeks but the issue resurfaced. We went again and the dealer agreed to replace the entire sun roof.

Our car was under warranty so it was free of cost. I believe there are threads on this topic but thought of sharing my experience so that folks with same issue can ping their dealer to get it fixed.
