Ok so heres the thing i have 17s right now looking to get BBS rs 16" with a 205/45 or a 215/45 but my dad keeps saying how i change the diamter to a 16 with those size tires ill overwork the engine? is this change in size that big or can i even go to a 40 on a 16?
Thanks Thomas

As long as the overall diameter of the wheel/tire package is roughly the same, it will have no impact on the engine.

To be close to stock sizes, you'd want a 205/50, 205/55, 195/55, or 215/50 for a 16 inch wheel.
The first two are most popular, the 3rd is stock, the 4th has very few choices available (but the choices include some good ones).
215/45 would be a bit short, but do-able. 205/45 would be way short, 215/40 would definitely be too short.

Yeah itll change the "gearing" a bit with smaller diameter tires. A lot of track guys will do it because you can get a little better accelleration from doing so. Speedo will be (more) off however.

I had 205/55s on some winter wheels and those tires were BIG and bubbly. too squishy and unresponsive. You would think it would affect the speedo the other way, but it STILL read faster than I was actually going. Just a european thing I guess... theyll always be off a little to keep you under the limit.

If the height is short like the 215/40, the engine does have to spin faster for the same road speed so that's something. I really liked the 205/50-16 option, tons of tires available. I'm toying with the idea of 215/50 but the offering is really limited. Plus, if you junk a tire on a road trip, you'll have a better chance of the 205/50 being in stock somewhere close.

edit: total nonsense, sorry.
