R50/53 Can anyone identify the ROM chip on the Instrument Cluster
Can anyone identify the ROM chip on the Instrument Cluster
Greetings.
I have a 2002 Mini Cooper S Do anyone know which Chip is the ROM on the Instrument Cluster? I need to migrate mine on to a used one I purchased to retain the feature coding.
Location or Chip# is what i'm looking for.
I know this isn't an easy question - so if you don't know, but know where to find this info - I would appreciate a pointer.
Thanks!

It's an interesting idea, to swap a chip into a used gauge and avoid buying a brand new replacement. However, I can see potential problems for making it work:
- The board or firmware may be at a different revision and whatever is stored in your original ROM might not be compatible.
- All components use surface mount technology (nothing is socketed). You will need excellent and high precision soldering skills to swap a chip.
- Most feature coding is probably stored in the BC1 module in the footwell, not the instrument cluster. A copy of the odometer value might be stored there (I heard there are 3 copies of the mileage stored in different modules). I can't think of many coded features that would be specific to the instrument cluster.
