A guy in our local club with an R56 who caught the dechroming bug has started using the black high temp gas grille paint.

While a bit skeptical at first he brought it by for me to see. Gotta say I was really surprised, it looks freaking awesome. He painted his gas cap, chrome grille, boot handle and door handles.

It left a really nice even satin factory look finish with just a hint of some texture. Had the same satiny appearance as black electrical tape.

Anyone else here dechromed their MINI in this fashion ? I did a search in the exterior mod section and came up zip.

 

I've been looking to do the same, do you know what brand he used? I've used some grill paint before on my lightpost out in front of my last home, but it didn't last. I don't remember the brand, but it has left me kind of weary...

 

I used this paint 2 weeks ago on my calipers, I took all the rust off first and then gave them 4 coats each. They do have texture to them, but look better then they were

Most people use plastidip since it's removable and really easy to use. I used to use it on my Cooper all the time.

 

My experience with hi-temp paint is that it requires heat to cure properly. Without the heat, the paint doesn't seem very durable. Krylon satin finish black is durable and easy to apply.

 

I first used it on my exhaust and it came out really nice. The only problem is it has to bake/ be heated or it will not come out right. I painted my rims with it and it had this horrible purple hue to it. They were not cooked lol

For the other chrome, krylon works great. Plasti-dip is also amazing, but I would not use it on larger surfaces because the texture and look can be off. It is best for the headlight/taillight rings and door handles.

As amazing as the finish was, he came by today after going on a Mini Rally on Saturday and apparently road debris chiped it up pretty good. So he's going to try the PD.

I did my best to steer him the vinyl route but he wants to try the PD first I guess.

 

What is the "vynal route"?

 

Using a sheet of vinyl and wrapping the parts for a most consistant coverage and you can get any color and finish you want and it should last longer than PD.

No problem, vinyl is probably the right way to do it short of painting them but I like the DIY and ease of use of the Plasti Dip.
