Close call with another MINI on the highway
Close call with another MINI on the highway
Sorry for the long post, just wanna share the experience I had tonight.
I was out tonight on the freeway promising myself I would conserve gas and keep it easy on the throttle since gas prices were going up. After I get on the freeway, I notice a White or Beige MINI that may or may not have had a black roof speeding on the fast lane in heavy rain. Now I think to myself, Damn that's a NICE cooper, and against my better judgment decide to catch up to get a better look :. I double clutch it into 4th gear and slammed the throttle as hard as I could, put my wipers on the fastest setting and zoomed off with bad visibility. As I near the MINI he goes into the right lane, I follow at speed. He slows a bit and gives me a chance to come up on his rear right side, he now starts merging into my lane, and I'm in his blind spot
.
I now have a white sedan about 1 1/2 car widths in front of me and a MINI merging into me on my left. Instinct takes over and I hold my thumbs down on the horn whilst slamming my foot down farther on the gas. (Because of my MINI's ultra short wheel base
), I barely squeeze in between the cooper and sedan. My rear end now loses grip due to my bald tires and I start sliding sideways down the highway cutting in front of the Mini and another car, me trying to counter steer so I don't slam into the concrete divider.
With the help of my DSC, my rear end catches some grip and I find myself back on the fast lane, facing the right direction, going a lot slower than I had been not seconds ago.
As I calm a bit after my narrow miss at a wreck, I notice the MINI on my right now passing me.
I don't know if I had actually hit him or the other car yet but I decide to follow him in case his car got damaged. I tail him from afar to see him taking the next exit, I get on the far right lane and now he tries to fake me out and ditches the last second and continues on the freeway.
I decide it isn't worth it and get off the highway, I check my car at the nearest gas station and thankfully didn't find any signs of a collision.
Now I'm just hoping the Cooper I found is on this site and reads this as I just want to know from your perspective what went down several hours ago. What did you see and how close of a miss at a wreck did we have?
Now the Cooper was a white or beige that might have had a black roof, and most likely was an R56 MCS.
tl;dr: Speed in heavy rain to catch up to a MINI, start sliding sideways at speed, thankfully nothing happened to my car or me, or (hopefully) the other MINI.

hard to know if the OP is bragging or apologizing or both...
from the perspective of the other car that does sound bad though - startling and very dangerous
high speed in heavy rain on bald tires?
speaking as someone who's done his share of dumb stuff, I reckon we only get a few of those "get away free" cards that allow us to shudder and learn from moments of poor judgment
count your blessings, and I wouldn't be surprised if the other person is still p*ssed
with respect,
Charlie

That's some very stupid driving on your part. Dude, all MINI's look alike, you don't need to chase one down in the rain with bald tires.
In fact tires should be replaced at 4/32" left for hydroplane.
I just ordered a set of Pilot Exalto A/S Michelins on sale at TireRack for my Son's car. He's at 6/32" and travels in the snow on occasion. Time to replace with less than 6/32" for snow driving. Going to put them on in late Summer before he returns to college, he will be at 4/32" by then.
Ordered this neat little toy too for my tool box - got it yesterday along with the tires - tried it out - really works great....

Rain- Bald Tires- Speeding- Following to close.
DUH !!!!!!
It would not be that bad if you wrecked your own car but if you caused someone else to wreck and really get injured or get killed I'll bet you would not feel to good.

@cmt52663 no I'm not trying to brag, but I would like to apologize to the other Mini, thats the reason for posting in the first place.
@mcsfever yes I realize just how stupid I was being, it could have gone alot worse than it did, and I have some new tires on the way already, thanks for the info on the tread depth
@planeguy yes I know, it was a "caught in the moment" kind of thing, I really don't plan on doing something this stupid in the future, driving like that is reserved for the track.

This includes reckless driving. As you can see this type of post is not well received on NAM, and is sometimes also met with infractions. So if you're reading this thread, please think twice before posting something similar.
