Drivetrain AccessPORT or Dimsport
AccessPORT or Dimsport
So I have been on here for about 2 hours reading about the new ECU stuff. I dont think I ever saw if you could use RMW tunes whit the AP. I have an 09 S, with a few mods and im wondering what the best option would be?
I'm still stuck in 1979 though, with the dimsport. Its okay though, the AP is helping Jan refine areas of maps that are translated for our dimsport folks still
Jan is the man. Anyone I know that I tell that he gives me updates on my tune when he unlocks new things free of charge, they're always amazed. Its not easy to find someone in any car brand who has such commitment to tuning and refining your tune (free of charge at that). Plus, his work is a work of art. Best option for you and your car, is to attend one of Jan's tuning parties, with your modifications installed so that he can personally customize your mini on the dyno with the specific tunes. While alta's version is good, its still in a way a canned off the shelf tune. Yes, you can datalog and send back to them until they keep tweaking it till you're happy, but you won't get the same results as a live tuning. Since every car responds differently to parts added and altitudes and other tuning specific variables, a dyno tune really is most beneficial.

And I heard through another source that Mynes is developing their own for 2011, and that AP will become a problem for the new engines. I'm confused because I'm new to MINI tuners (familiar with GM), and I'm wanting to get as much out of my MCSa as possible without going to the JCW Tuning Kit. Has anyone had any problems with the AP? Is it worth waiting for or should I settle for the JCW tuning kit? Any suggestions are appreciated

Its really a choice up to you. If you're willing to deal with an aftermarket tuning to push your factor of safety a little more and get more power out of the car (as you say you want to get as much out of your mcsa as possible), then an aftermarket tune will always give you more. The JCW tuning kit (or any factory sport tuning for that matter) will always include a LARGE factor of safety in their products. Why? Warranty & Liability. Less of a chance of parts breaking and being replaced under warranty. Also, they want to keep the chance of something going terribly wrong as slim as possible. Otherwise, it'll hurt the brand name a lot. Look at Toyota for example, they're spending millions upon millions trying to make their name live up to what it used to be in the past, affordable and reliable.
So, advantage to the jcw tuning kit? Its been engineered and R&D'd to a GREAT extent, meaning you'll have little to no trouble for the most part with this. Plus, if anything does go wrong, its automatically covered under warranty.
An aftermarket tune will give you much more power for less money, but then you're risking part failure due to more power, say, your clutch. Other internals in the engine are being pushed further as well, valves, pistons, fuel systems, etc. All in all, I'd say that most of us who are tuned have had little to no trouble with the aftermarket tune and that its VERY daily driveable. You see some highly modified/tuned cars that basically bring all their tools with them because theres always the chance of breaking down. Yes, theres been some CEL's and minor issues, but noones had an engine blow due to the tune afaik.
Hope that helps some.
I'm assuming your MCSa is a '11? AFAIK the ecu hasn't been hacked for the '11s up till now. RMW and Alta are currently using the AP to try to crack them. The dimsport isn't dead per-se, but the ap will do what the dimsport can plus some more.

I still have some time to mull it all over but you definitely have given me food for thought. Thanks.
