Drivetrain magnaflow resonator cooked
I have the magnaflow system on my 03' MCS for about 15k miles now and just recently I started to hear a rattle coming from underneath the car. I've been searching the boards and seen that other magnaflow owners have had their resonators come apart on the inside.
Any way I was wondering if anybody has taken the front section off of their stock exhaust system and put in place of the resonator, or do I have to go to a muffler shop and get a new section made?
Also does removing the resonator make the drone go away or just move it further aft?
Tks.

I've heard of some people having magnaflow replacing their resonators under warranty and then having the new one doing the same thing all over again. I think I want to try a straight section in place of the resonator anyway just to see / hear what it sounds like.
My Magnaflow has the same problem. They will replace it, huh? But it's likely to happen again? I'll just get rid of it, never liked it to begin with. Borla, here I come.

I had that problem I have replaced the resonator and it has been fine so far. When mine broke it made a loud pop as it was cooling off. Then the rattle started. Magnaflow replaced it for free as I only had it for several months. Good Luck
Have had the same problem with the Borla Sport Resonator. Melted the first one, had it replaced then melted the second one that very same weekend. Since I race the Mini I just called Borla up and let them know on the second one that it was probably not a good idea to reccomend these for race or to remove the resonator for race versions. I plan on replacing mine with a straight pipe as well.
for all those who had to replace the resonator, did you race your car prior or did it result from daily driving. If it was daily driving you figure the manufacturer should have took this into consideration when designing it. Also did you have to send your broken one back before they send a new one, this would be very inconvenient.
Thanks

Well I bit the bullet and went to a local muffler shop today and had them make me a straight section to replace my rattling resonator. It did make the car a little louder, but not as bad as I thought it would be, it also seemed to move the dreaded magnaflow drone further aft in the car. I also had them reduce the system from three sectoins to two and weld every thing up. All in all I have to say, i'm pretty happy now, RATTLES are gone for ever!
I have had mu Magnaflow for about 2 years now and recently I noticed a rattle. Very annoying. The systems is actually too loud for me anyhow so I have a question...will a resonator other than Magnaflow possibly quiet it down some? I have been considering adding a second resonator in an attempt to muffle the drone and noise but haven't gotten around to it. Also, has anyone put some dynamat or the like in the boot to reduce the noise? Would this be helpful?
Last week I spent a good deal of time on the phone with a tech (forgot his name) from Magnaflow. He knew of the drone issue I was inquiring about. He said that the exhaust gasses were traveling too fast through the system, and that is what causes the drone. That was apparently inherent of their "wide open performance". He said what had to be done was the following:
A) install an additional resonator in the rear tube, just before the loop
...OR
B) tack weld a 2.5" to 1.75 " reducer coupling inside one of the sections before the loop. The coupling should be put in in reverse direction (1.75" toward the engine). The exhaust gas will hit this reducer and slow down the exhaust flow. Low end torque will improve, but top end power will suffer.
I have also had my first resonator replaced many months ago. The had produced a batch of resonators with "bad welds" inside.

>>Are you sure its the resonator and not a hanger that is touching the heat shield that is causing the rattles?
Totally off subject, but... DUDE! What's up with that sig/pic?! Bush looks like he's a **** doing the ol' "Sieg Heil" ...Not exactly a flattering photo - unless you find that kind of thing desirable. And if true, then TMI!

To those that have had their resonators replaced, does Magnaflow just send you out a new resonator section, piping included, or just the resonator itself? Also, do you have to send in the bad section?

You have to go through the retailer that the orig purchase was made...they will send you the replacement section with pipes pre-assembled, just as it was originally. You must send back the old section. They may charge you and then refund when returned. Husker just sent without deposit...
