I had the car in for service at 30k and they changed the oil while it was there but forgot to reset the service indicator.

The indicator is now 1200 miles past the oil change and the engine light has come on.

Is this related or coincidental?

 

I would take it in and make them change the oil again and reset the indicator...

 

When you say the engine light is one, do you mean the check engine icon? What color is it - red or amber?

How do you know they forgot to reset the service indicator?

 

Why would they need to change it again after only 1200 miles? Just so the mileage counter would line up right with the actual?

Can they set it to 1200 so it will match up?

Since he's at 30K now, he won't be getting any more "free" oil changes, so it'll be up to him to keep track from here on out. Hopefully he'll be changing it more often than what the counter calls for anyway...

 

It's the amber engine icon. I know they didn't change it, because it said that I was 5000 miles from an oil change instead of the usual 18k.

 

I suggest you go to the dealer, have them do a reset and check the issue with the CEL or warning light.

Still under warranty. Get it fixed and now do your oil changes every 5K or 7500 depending on your choice of Oils.

Fact, if you don't change your oil often on our MCS turbo cars you can have the turbo go out do to oil sludge blockage. Do not play roulette with your turbo.

OK, that sound like the check engine light. Should be independent of the OBC which shows the mileage to different services.

First, on the mileage - you should go into the menu and figure out whether the 5,000 miles left is for the next oil change or for some other service that will be due (probably brakes or brake fluid). It sounds like they probably did reset the oil change counter. But something else has a shorter period of time.

Second, on the check engine light - run down to an Advance Auto or similar. They should be able to scan the code for you and let you know what the error is. Really no way to tell at this point whether it was related to the recent service. Once you get the code and can do some research, decide whether you'll need to take it in to the dealer.
