R50/53 Boot wont open
Boot wont open
So today I decided to pressure wash my car after coming home from up north. It was nasty, full of salt, dirt, and it was just nasty. While I was cleaning the inside, I went to open the boot to clean it, and now it wont open with that button by the license plate not with the key. Does anyone know if these things have issues? I took the screws off and pulled it off to let it air out and dry if there is any water in it. I also read a few other post by not any luck.
Yep, they are known to have issues with the wiring in the handle that goes to the microswitch and the license plate lights getting wet and shorting. Mine just did it last week. Apparently people have had issues where it will just randomly pop open. Mine would pop open every time I turned off the headlights or running lights.
You're onto the right solution. Remove the handle and dry it out. Put it somewhere warm for a while and it should dry out and work again. Then do something to seal it up a bit to avoid future issues.

Ok I got it off and dried it with the air compressor. I hooked it back up and it didnt work. I turned the lights on to make sure it was hooked up right and it was. When the lights went off. It opened!!! I guess this is gonna be the temp way of opening my boot. Does anyone know where I can buy a new one???
You can buy the switch and seal separately, or the whole unit in black, primed, or chrome. Any dealer can get them, or you can order it through PenskeParts.com or the like. You're looking at $90-100 depending on finish.
But I wouldn't give up just yet. I couldn't see any water in mine either. I think the water wicks up somewhere small and tight. Use heat. I put it on the mantle above my fireplace for 3-4 hours and that did it. You could try using a heat gun if you're in a hurry. But I bet it will work when fully dried out.

I took the boot handle off and its sitting on my kitchen counter. I let it sit till tomorrow. I actually found the switch today when I was cleaning the car and I took the seat out. When I found it I was like WTF
