Top rear tail light broken?

Hey guys - so I searched (for real!), and most posts seem to be about the right/left rear tail lights, but I didn't find many re; the top brake light (the one under the spoiler on the roof of 2006 MCS). So anyway, my top rear tail light is broken - no idea how it happened, but I noticed today the entire outside red plastic cover is gone, so it's exposed. Is the dealer the only option for replacement or is there something I can buy install?

Thanks very much, and happy thanksgiving.

It is called a third brake light. It is a common problem for both Cooper and Cooper S models. The light's lens is just poorly made and often cracks or falls off. The remedy is to replace the light. You can purchase one at the dealer or buy an aftermarket one, although I can't remember if the aftermarket ones actually lasted any longer than OEM.

I just had the @*#$% lens pop off on our 06 Cooper S. The entire assembly has to be replaced, and the cost at my dealer is $171 for the part alone. Has anyone done this replacement DIY??

Any feedback appreciated.

On a Cooper S it is very easy, just open your hatch and remove the 3 screws that hold the light on. Close the hatch and pop the light out and replace.

On a justacooper it is alot more difficult because the rear wing sits flat and right above the light making it just about impossible to remove the light without first removing the wing.

Thanks

Thanks for the feedback. It does look pretty easy, now that I finally took a look. I also found the part at MiniMania.com and saved $50 from he dealer price, including shipping.

Brushing snow off of the Cooper S this morning and noticed that the "third stoplamp" was broken as described. Grrrrrrr...!

I wonder if it's a function of trying to brush snow off of the awkward crevice under the spoiler?

Anyway the part number I got from realoem.com is:
63 25 6 935 789

Have seen quite a few of them on ebay.
Far better price than dealer.

Superglue, my friends. Flashback...3 years ago pulling thru touch less carwash, looking out rearview mirror I saw a red blur fly off top of car. I got out and went in the now still wash bay and found my 3rd light lens blown clean off. Went home and superglued it back on. It was a clean break. Again, that was 3 years ago with no problems.

My seal was rotted and gone, obviously removed before. I spent the 50 bux on the black aftermarket one with clear lense and I think it looks pretty good.
