Hey all,

So I just replaced all my brakes on my 2007 MCS, went to reset the back brakes and for some reason it's not letting me? Anyone have this issue before? If so what do I have to do to get it fixed!? (keep in mind, closest MINI dealer is 130 miles away. :[) Any advice is appreciated!

 

What do you mean reset the back brakes?

Are you saying you can't get the pistons back in so that you can get the new pads in or something else?

If it's the pistons, you have to turn them as you push them in - you can buy a tool kit from Harbor Freight for as little as $20.....

If it's just the light staying on, you probably need to replace one or both of the sensors.

If it's something else, you'll need to give us more info.....

 

If they were worn down to the point that the service light came on for the brakes, then you need to replace the sensors. Did you do that as part of the brake job?

 

No i did not replace the sensors, but the brakes were not completely worn down to the point the service light came on. It just came on yesterday, and the brakes were replaced a week or two ago. When i went to do the reset myself, it came up saying -390 miles. So i'm guessing it was a reminder kind of thing? But none the less, it still wouldn't reset.

 

If you followed the CBS reset procedure as stated in a different thread somewhere on the board here and that didn't work, then I agree with the others that a sensor got either damaged or worn too far. The sensors are fancier than the older BMW models where they do have a varying level of resistance the more worn the pads get.

 

Sensors easy to replace?

 

Sensors are quite easy to replace. They are not too expensive around $18 mail order.

I have had this problem before after replacing the pads and the sensors and trying to reset the sensor, it still stayed on. Had to bring it back to Mini and they reset it.

 

Anyone happen to have parts numbers, and a how to on how to replace?

 

If I read the realoem site correctly (I used a June 2007 build date):

front sensor - part no. 34356789329
rear sensor - part no. 34356789330

The sensor end clips into a slot in the brake pad. You just have to follow the cable to where it plugs into the rest of the system. For me, the front sensor connection was pretty easy to get to from underneath the car (I'd read of some people undoing their fender well cover - I didn't have to do that). The rear was a little more of a challenge as it is located up inside the quarter panel in front of the rear wheel well. Had to cut a couple zip ties along the way, so maybe get a pack so you can replace them.

Alright so.. I'm not too sure it's the brake sensor? Unless there's only one for the back. I snapped a few pictures. Seems there's a wire hanging down. Anyone able to identify it for me?


Sorry about the bottom picture, it's a little crappy off my iPhone. The part I'm talking about though is the wire that's hanging down towards the bright spot. If someone needs more pictures i'd be more happy to.
It's the right, rear. If anyone has any infor, i'd really appreciate it. I'm completely lost.

 

That looks like the sensor from what I can tell. The sensors are located on the front left wheel and the right rear wheel. On the right rear, you should have a brake line, the line for the emergency/parking brake, a line for the TPMS system (I think), and a line for the brake pad sensor. In your bottom pic, the two small lines are clipped together? One of them runs into the back of the hub assembly I think. So the one hanging down would be the sensor.

If you look at the back edge of the caliper, there should be a wiring running in there. On mine, the last clip for the sensor doubles as the cap for the bleeder valve.

 

Looks like your sensor wire got shredded. You can replace it or strip the two wires and twist them together to eliminate the light.
