Final Drive Question.....

Does the Mini have a hypoid type final drive in the transaxle, or a non-hypoid final drive?

I'm working on finding an alternative lubricant for my transaxle and some that I'm considering say "Not for use with hypoid gears."

FYI, I've got an '06 JCW convertible with the 6 speed Getrag and factory LSD.

Thanks much!

What makes you want to consider a different lube from the OEM (or even the Redline/Amsoil stuff)?

I believe OEM can be improved upon. And Amsoil and Redline are the only two I'm considering. But the Amsoil lube specifically prohibits use with LSD. And neither is suitable with hypoid drives. I know many people have been using Redline (and I use it in the engine and final drive of my motorcycle), but I'm just being cautious. I'd just like to know if the final drive on the Mini is hypoid or not. I suspect not, but knowledge is good. And I haven't been able to find a photo of it yet.

Thanks, though.

I agree that there are some very nice alternatives for the transmission lube, but remember that Getrag is the one that specifies what lube is recommended. And the OEM stuff is very good.

When a manufacturer specifies a particular lube, it's not just the lube. It's also the deal they get with the lube manufacturer. I'm sure Texaco supplies all the lubes for not only Mini but BMW as well. That way, the car manufacturer has one stop shopping for their lubes. I'm sure Texaco is good. Just not the best.

'Still hoping someone has some info on whether the final drive is hypoid or not. Or can someone direct me to a photo of the ring gear?

Thanks!

Well, I answered my own question. I saw a photo of a Quaife with the gear installed and it dawned on me that all the rotating elements in the engine and transmission have their rotational axis' parallel to each other. Thus, no hypoid or even bevel gears. Question answered.

That is because with hypoid gears you need a high pressure lubricant. Your MINI has no hypoid gears. I also have the factory LSD & for me the stock fluid has been fine. I changed it out at 30K & will soon change it again with the spec'd fluid.
