Plasti Dip Questions

So I have been reading about the latest miricle in blacking out and "painting" trim pieces. I actually despise chrome with a passion about 90% of the time. The amount of chrome on my car works and looks good but I think I would like the look of less shiny bling. I have read about how easy Plasti Dip is to use and how easy it is to reverse is not desired any longer. Basically, I want it and I want to try spraying stuff soon.

Upon my search on Plasti Dip's website it says Harbor Freight is a supplier but I went there and a few people hadn't heard of it, but I was then eventually pointed into the electrical section. I only saw clear and black liquid tape (by Plasti Dip). The can was $6 like most people mention so I assumed it would work, but the can is only 6 oz and I wonder if it is truly the same thing because it is meant for adding a simple, non-conductive surface.

I also read about people getting it at Home Depot and I see on their website that they have it also for $6 but it is truly Plasti Dip (not liquid tape). The container at HD is 11oz so I am more confident. Here is the link for it: http://www.homedepot.com/h_d1/N-5yc1...atalogId=10053

Ideas? Will the overpriced liquid tape work the same or should I just use it for a different project? Ideas, inspiration? What needs spraying first?

I guess I just started this thread because after tons of reading and searching I was entirely sure what the Plasti Dip is or where was the easiest to get it. Hopefully this will help future searchers.

Home Depot is the best place to get it.

Liquid tape will NOT work. It is way too runny and watery.

Plastidip is very forgiving when it comes to dripping, liquid tape is.... liquid.

Home Depot or Lowes. I bought mine at Lowes for about $7 a can.

Ok so I went to HD on my way into work today (thankfully they open at 6 so I wasn't late). It was $6 and hidden in the paint section. The paint guy at the counter had never heard of it and said they didn't have it. The guy in tools knew right where it was.

I picked mine up at Ace hardware, they had plenty in stock and they knew exactly were it was, worked great on my hoodscoup, door handles, gas cap, side scuttles. I also did the headlight trim rings, and they came out ok, but not as good as i wanted, i think maybe I should have removed them.

Bwaahahahaha. The Plasti at my local HD was 'hidden' behind a display like that too

I'd be concerned withthe flex properties of the Plast Dip. I would think the clearcoat would crack and flake after a while.

Hmm. Seems like it'd be ok. Worst case scenario the clear cracks and peels, then just peel the PD off and reapply.

Yes, and it comes out AMAZING. It literally looks like if it was done at the factory. Plus the clearcoat makes the finish smoother and it protects it. You can still remove the plastidip after if you wanna go back to stock. It is the perfect mod combination, i would never use anything else. I had it on my BMW Z4M for over two years in the florida sun and it withstood a like new appearance during that entire time. Just make sure you plastidip the front and back of whatever you are coating and not just the front, that way you will coat the ENTIRE surface and the adhesion between sides is stronger than the "shrinking or stretching force" the sun or cold might exert.

When you say "clear coat", can you be more specific? What brand, type, etc.

TIA.

I got my PlastiDip from OSH, I've done a bunch of plasti-dipping to my car, from the rims, to the eyelids, to the gas cap and I can tell you the rims are the hardest to remove. So make sure you really like the look before hand, It makes it look really cool tho lol.

I use the dupli-color clearcoat that they sell at advance auto parts. But any brand of automotive clearcoat should do.

I will get pictures sometime soon. It was really easy. I took the trim pieces off, wiped with a clean cloth and simple green diluted in a sprayer to get the road grime off. I then used 2 trashcans and the cap to the can to prop the parts up and gave them 3-4 coats with 5-30 minutes between coats. Reinstall and it looks mean. Very simple stuff.

I am contemplating plasti dipping the reflectors in the wheels arches. Has anyone had experience with this? It is funny going into a hardware store looking for plasti dip and explaining what your doing with it. The associates look at you like your crazy. "You want to do what? Plasti Dip your what?" haha.

Well anyways you guys have it easy since your not in Minot ND like me. Plasti dip is about as rare as a GTO Judge. All I found was Plasti dip in a brush on variant. Ordered some to the local ACE Hardware. Just to let everyone know, PLASTI DIP IN AEROSOL form IS DISCONTINUED. I ordered 6 cans just to make sure I will have enough to last through a nuclear winter.

Do you guys recommend plasti dipping the headlight rings while still mounted on the bonnet? The scoop, side scuttles and gas cap is easy enough to remove I have just read nothing but disasters about removing the front slat type grill and rings.

The grill and headlight rings aren't too difficult to remove. I'd remove them and paint them.

Ok and the scuttles? Are they difficult? I was browsing around the forums trying to find a write up but no luck. I pushed on them a bit and I am afraid of snapping them even though all I have read is that you have to force them.
