Keep in mind that you wont get huge gains with just an intake, maybe a coupla/few hp. Some have experienced good results with a K&N drop-in panel filter. I have a K&N 57i (cone-style) which has since been replaced with the Typhoon. I get a touch better throttle response and a nice little honk at full throttle that I can hear with the windows open. Its not a CAI because there is no box surrounding it, keeping engine heat away. But it has directionally unrestricted flow which is good.

I like my setup. Its combined with a Megan cat-back. I get nice sound and small gains that Im happy with.

Usually, the best results come with a cone-shaped CAI because they have no directional restriction and (some) engine heat is kept at bay.

Its sort of a toss up between a cone thats not a CAI (like mine) and an aftermarket panel filter in the stock airbox because although the cone is not directionally restricted, which is good, it allows hot air in, which is not so good. The panel filter in the box draws in cool air from the outside of the car which is cooler than whats in the engine compartment, which is good, but it only pulls in what it can from a long plastic tube with some pretty sharp bends in it.

There are existing threads on NAM that delve into this topic.

There are other brands and different filtering media cone-style filters which I sure others will comment on.

The Way looks like a good way (no pun intended) to go. And the price is very competitive.

I have a friend that has a DDM intake on his Cooper. Nice product for sure.

He bought it from Aaron at Outmotoring. A great guy to deal with.

You'll find several threads here on NAM describing the redeeming qualities of the aFe intake for the 1st Gen JustaCooper. Like most of the alternatives, the claims of HP gain are a bit overblown but it certainly adds a deep, throaty growl under acceleration. Very easy to install too.

One of the reasons I ended up going with the aFe is the fact that you can get the Pro Dry filter with it. I wasn't crazy about the added inconvenience and mess of the oiled filters that accompany most of these CAIs. The Pro Dry can be removed and cleaned as often as you like.

Here's just one source of many that you'll find browsing the web:

I would like something with a heat shield (unless it really wont make much of a difference), but all the intakes that I have ran across with the heatshield doesnt have the full intake pipping, which I want.

You can use this airfilter from K&N. Because its not an open filter (not "cone-style" as you call it), this should fit right into your original airfilter box. This makes the airflow to your engine better.
But im not sure if this is what you are after..

Go with our WayDDM intake, I know I'm bias. But this intake really works and makes real power. The biggest advantages we have over all the others are that the airflow goes straight into the throttle body to improve throttle responce. We also get rid of the factory resonator box, and have a heatshield that the others don't.

i have a DDM and really like it, straight forward design (basically what Way said above) and sounds awesome to boot!

can hear it a bit (kinda mixes with the exhaust): http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature...&v=F_o27dkh2eM

The aFe that I installed has worked well, and I loved the fitment. Any intake should yield about the same gain for the R50, but the aFe looked a bit more stealth and sounds great. Also, the dry filter works great with a dusty climate!

i have stock box with drop in K&N, but leave the intake tube just add nine 3/4 holes to the left and front oof the bottom half of your airbox, its very easy and makes a noticable diffrence and saves alot of money and u have a lesser chance of water problems than the cone

I'm curious about this but I get a forbidden error trying to play the mp3. I'd like to hear it.
