Mini has taken the wraps off of three designs for zippy electric scooters, the first two-wheel concept in the carmaker's history.
The zero-emission scooters come in three flavors: there is a two-seater model, a sportier, single-seat version, and a "British racing green," 1960s-inspired scooter based on the design ethos of the Mod era.
According to Wired, "Mini didn't offer any specs beyond saying the E-Scooter is powered by an electric motor and recharged from a wall socket. Instead of a key, the scooters start with a smartphone app. Sillier still, GPS software will alert you to other E-Scooter riders in the area and flash your headlights when you pass them."
"Here we are at the beginning of what could possibly become another icon," said Mini's Adrian van Hooydonk, senior VP of of BMW group design, of the Mini Scooter E Concept line.

Well I guess we will have to wait and see if these jobbies make an appearance on the dealers showroom floors in the future. One of our local Subaru dealers has been selling scooters for a while and they have attracted a lot of interest in the showroom.

I think it's a really neat idea. And they're fully electric. It makes me wonder how zippy they'll be and how long they'll run on a charge. Even though I live somewhat rurally (3.5 mi outside of a small town), I could see it as an option to commute into town for light (very light) shopping. Of course that solely relies upon how expensive they are and if they're even going to be sold here in the states.
I don't know how "affordable" it will be, however. Van Hooydonk keeps referring to it as a "premium" product, and MINI clearly has Vespa in its sights, so it could be anywhere in the $3000 to $7000 price range. (Piaggio, Honda, Yamaha, etc., seem comparable.)

If I needed a scooter, I'd get one.
