I did it in my second gen. I have the Alacantara JCW wheel. It is super simple. And yes you can you just have to the right MFSW connections.

Look here: http://web.mac.com/jonnieoh/My_MINI_...el_How-To.html
The writeup is for a JCW steering wheel, but a standard 3 spoke has exactly the same fitment.

I called up a local junk yard, they said they got for for $100 But I am not sure what condition it is in. They are fairly reputable. I got my seats there, airbag and all except for the 4 bolts for $150

The biggest expense would be a new airbag. MFSW controls would also be pricey. Used, stock 3 spoke steering wheels can be obtained at good prices (I know of one available ) from people who upgraded to a JCW steering wheel.

I just changed mine out as I always thought the two spoke wheel dated the interior. Got the wheel from the NAM market place for $75, airbag from E-bay for $51 and the MFSW switches from Mini matt in England for $75 already carbon wrapped too. I think this is one of the best interior changes I have made.

I can't stand those old steering wheels so much that I would not get the years they came in just because of the wheel. It had to have been one of the worst styled items MINI has done. I also think you are doing your MINI right if you can get this done.
