Is this too much to pay for PS pump & fan
Is this too much to pay for PS pump & fan
PS pump died a few day ago dont know if the fan not working killed it or not. But got a price from a local mini repair place that quoted me $ 946.00 for everything,,,,Fan , pump , fluid and labour does this sound about right..... I was a decent VW bug mechanic and know how to work on cars but the Mini seems a bit picky on some parts that are installed....especially the PS pump ive read a lot of horror stories here regarding the pump. Seems like you can either get a bad one out the box or totally kill a good one by not having the fan come on when it should. ( someone should come up with a way to tell if fan is running or not while you are in the car driving , like a light or something ).might clothes pin a playing card on it to hear it working ...lol.....Sooooo it looks like im gonna get a shop to do it with a warranty. dont want the headaches , but what bothers me is that it looks pretty easy and a LOT less expensive to do it myself.....Aaaaarrrgh ! decisions , decisions.......
Sounds good if you are getting both the pump and fan.
The pump is around $600 and the fan is about $180 (IIRC which I probably don't)
I agree with you thoughts on having it all in their hands if there is a failure of the replacement pump.

It is a fairly easy DIY job, just make sure the fan comes on when it is supposed to after installation. I went ahead and replaced my fan because the one on the car was the original and at ~115k miles I figured it was cheap insurance.
That's a fair price for the parts with labor.
I'd consider installing the cooling duct kit. It's very easy, and will help keep road debris out of the fan. It's also inexpensive. Bill's instructions have it, I think.
You might also consider replacing the lower steering column. $140 or so online. The lower joint on mine completely seized on one axis, and several others have had the same issue. I think it's just a matter of time/wear for the lower joint to seize. If you've got more than 75,000 miles on the car, I'd replace it. From looking at mine when it seized, it's pretty hard on the rack when it goes. I'd at least have the mechanic check it. With the suspension unloaded, it's not hard to tell if it's having trouble by turning the steering wheel lock-to-lock without the assistance of the steering pump.
