Bring it to Auto Zone or some place like it that does a free scan of your car for trouble codes. Then afterwards you can disconnect the battery negitive cable for a few minutes. This will clear any codes stored in the computer. Then hook the battery back up. If the check engine light does not came back on when driving , then it was nothing to worry about. If it comes on again. It's time to see a mechanic.

Some places change the oil and filter and neglect resetting the Service Interval clock. If possible, check where purchased and see when it was changed last.

If you are like me, I just purchased what I needed and did it myself regardless...there are some DIY threads here too as the filter housing can be difficult at times. Cross threading of the cap and tearing of the O ring are common issues.

If you use aftermarket filters you are taking your chances. They sometimes have poor mfg tollerances and/or bad rubber O-rings ultimately causing your new oil to be dumped out on the tarmac at first start up or worse, 5 miles down the road.....as a rule we stick with MANN or OEM filters whenever possible....

Again, check the various threads here on a search.

And good luck with your new MINI

There seems to be a little confusion on the thread as whether it is the SES light or the maintenance light for oil service.

If it is the SES light on the column then "oldtruckpainter"s suggestion is a good one.

Did you recently fill up and not close the cap securely? That will trip the SES light. (Not that its ever happened to me but "a friend" of mine told me about it)
