What VLT% are your window's tinted?
What VLT% are your window's tinted?
I know each state has their window tint laws but for some it appears no one follows those laws. For example, I live in Colorado and all side windows and back must not have less than 27% VLT. But... I see most cars and trucks with the back and rear side windows darker than the fronts and therefore must be tinting more than the law requires since window tints come in 35, 20, and 5 percent VLT.
What VLT are your window tinted at and what are your states requirements?

20% all around cept front windows (no sunroof). maryland is 35%, however, I have never been pulled over for them. Been followed by cops for miles but it was to mess with me.
It looks a lot darker (hard angle). 3m tint film

Unknown here in NY, but I'm hoping to get it done within the next few months so I'd love to know. (And a place to go for a good deal)

not sure about legal in NE, but i have 20% all around and 40% on my windshield and haven't ever had any problems with the law.
there was another thread discussing this topic as well and a fellow mini owner has 5% on his windshield and double 5% on every other window.....to me thats just ridiculous.

i rarely drive at night....if i do its no where far and i drive slow. during the day its GREAT.
yes, i get tickets from time to time. not too much though, ive only had 3 in my life as far as tint goes.
mine is Llumar tint.
everyone always asks how i see...i really dont know, i just do.. lol i guess im used to it.
(old pic but same tint)

this is with double 5% all around and NOTHING on the windshield (i just got it replaced cause it was cracked, and took a pic before i retinted it)

Of course, then you have to put up with still being pulled over and showing them all your info. and wasting time....35% tint isn't much though. I'd much rather do 20% all around.
I am going to do 50% on side and back, nothing on the windshield. I'm using Hüper Optik and my main reason for tinting is to help save the interior and keep the car cooler, rather than for looks.
However, I like the looks of the darker tint but in NJ you aren't supposed to tint at all.
The 50% Hüper Optik won't give the overall dark look that might attract the attention of the police.

I got some samples from an installer - 50%,35%,20%, and 5%.
* 50% - I can't even tell it's there.
* 35% - Is somewhat visible and does cut down the light reasonably. Doesn't to much for privacy though.
* 20% - Not too bad, still can see out well at night and as for privacy, it obscures details of people and they appear more as silhouettes.
* 5% - For me it's too dark for adequate viewing at night. Privacy is great, can't even tell there is anyone in the vehicle. I can see why this is called "limo".
Conclusion:
I think I'll go with 35% on the front side windows and 20% on rear side and back windows; of course, nothing on the windshield. Although this does not comply with Colorado's tint law, max. 27% on all windows - none on windshield, it does seem to be the norm on vehicles that I see on the road in this state.

I got an 8.5 x 11 in. sample of the 50% (Hüper Optik) Ceramic Series film. I held it on the inside of my side window and i could tell the difference.

i had 20% true gray all around. just got a ticket in CA for the front tint. even though people think 35% is the legal limit in CA you are technically not allowed to have any material besides clear uv blocking stuff on the front driver and passenger windows. now i have 0% on the front windows and keeping the 20% on the rears and sunroof. after a while i've gotten used to the no tint thing but some times i still forget that other people can see the weird faces i make at them
Basically seems to say, but I could be wrong, 25% on top portion of windshield, 25% on door windows, anything on other side windows, and, if there are two side mirrors, anything on the rear windows.

GANGSTA!
Can't believe how many went 20% in this thread........
Fine if that's the look you want, at the expense of drive-ability in the dark mornings and night. What you actually have is 15% when added to the factory light tint. (You can have it measured with a meter).
We have the same laser blue with black top except with sunroofs.
Had 20% installed just last Monday .... was WAY too dark for backing up at night. Looked GANGSTA just like above. Drove by a friends house and he said it was so Gangsta he could not see who was in the car from his porch 30 feet away.
2 days later went to another installer and he measured the VLT - on top of the light factory tint he said the net VLT was 15% measured !
Had it removed next day and 35% installed - Looks OEM (not Gansta), plenty dark enough. Had the sunroof done in 15% for a net 5% measured limo ceramic for sun glare and heat (reflects 55% of solar energy). All high quality Llumar film.
