R57 Cooper S Convertible

Dear All,

I'm a real newbie - with Mini and all the audio terms. Just purchased a hidden R57 jewel, not a demo, just was never sold. Is PERFECT in my eyes, just as I would have ordered. But I'm so disappointed with the 'hifi' stereo. I'm not a perfectionist, however I do appreciate a decent sounding stereo. As you all know who have it - what a disappointment the upgraded system was in 2009.

I see lots of info on the R56. But, help me please on my convertible. The front door speakers seem to be the same (?)

In a nutshell: I appreciate decent sounding music. What I want is stay within my budget. I'm thinking: Keep the head unit, keep the amplifier but replace door speakers and rear speakers.

Is there a 'definitive' answer out there (i've combed the threads for R57 info) that you are happy with? I will copy you! Help please...! I don't want to spend a fortune, I can't. But will go..$500 - $700? Other half is already complaining!! I will do the labor myself (I think, if it's not too complicated!)

Thank you and appreciate your thoughts very much.

Randy

Just found your post. I am in the same boat and I ordered 2010 HK speakers to replace the door speakers and the rear speakers. If you have not done so already check out this thread:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...an-kardon.html

The total cost including freight from the UK came to about $600 I believe.

I have not installed mine yet due to travel and I decided to install some sound deadening from www.sounddeadenershowdown.com while I had the panels off.

Already had one ugly suprize - my fault - I had read that the rear speakers on a 2009 R57 are 6" x 9" even though the grills are circular. NOT SO!! Mine are 5-1/2" round with separate tweeters (just like it looks like it would be from the grill shapes).

I also ordered A pillar panels with the HK Tweeters. I assumed R57 and R56 would be the same (another mistake on my part). I can make them work but the R57 A panels have a notch cut out to allow the top latch to engage. I will have to cut a notch or move the new HK Tweeters to the original A panels.

I am still a few weeks away from completion but will post at the above thread when I get it all done.

Good luck!!

I completed the HI-FI to HK swap this past weekend! Wow, what an improvement! Fortunatly, the guys at Morristown Mini knew what speakers were correct, and I got the round rear speakers. It's the fronts, however, that made the huge difference! Much clearer, crisper, and no problems with volume. The HI-FI amp powers the speakers just fine. I am not an expert (by any means), but the swap was simple.

I didn't order the HK pillar trim, just the tweeters so I didn't run into that problem.

You will be very pleased when you're done!

I'd like to do this too (on my 2009 Hi-Fi R57). Can you give us a parts list? Also, what do you have to remove to get to the rear speakers?

Check out this post:

https://www.northamericanmotoring.co...-kardon-3.html

Be careful - the R57 has round (5 1/2" inside) rear woofers NOT 6" x 9" like the R56. If you order replacement A pillars with the HK tweeters be sure to get the right one for the R-57. These A pillars are unique to the R-57 - totally different than the R-56.

The front door HK speakers are the same for R-56 and R-57. I ordered mine from the UK - see my post in other thread.

Good luck. I did not change the tweeters or amp but the sound is much improved with the HK speakers.

I too replaced the "Premium" Sound speakers with HK. I swapped all, including the tweeters and the sound is much improved! As everyone has said, replacing just the woofers is a dramatic improvement alone. But, the sound from the HK front tweeters is much improved as well! I purchased from Morristown Mini. Total price for all 6 Front Speakers and 2 Rear Woofers (round) was $411 including shipping.
