what you guys think of tarox big brake kits?
it looks great that its 6 or 10 pos. but other companies like stoptech alta has like 4 pos. do you guys think that the stop tech and alta has a better system? i mean if money wasnt a problem of course... i mean shoot.. if you can afford brake kits you can afford any of these pretty much... welll kinda.. but you guys get what im saying... i mean i did a search on tarox but nothing. right now im thinking about the tarox because of the 6 pos. any opinions?
If you want to talk to people with firsthand knowledge of several big brake options for the MINI then try calling Eric Savage at Helix13.com or Randy Webb at Webbmotorsports.com
I know both vendors do sell big brake kits for the MINI and that Randy is coming out with his own big brake kit for the MINI in 16" and 17" variants in the $1500-2500 range so it will be competitive. Not sure on the final design but he has been looking at all of the serious competition.
Some things to remember about big brake kits. 6 or 10 pistons does not always mean better. You have to balance the entire brake system and be thinking as well about the rear brakes and what you plan to do to beef them up appropriately to compliment the fronts. In the rear there is a Alta rear brake kit or you might go with Powerslot rotors, better brake pads and stainlesssteel brakelines with upgraded brake fluid.
Consider the Helix stage 2 brake upgrade- for $1699 Stoptech brakes
Or at MossMini-$1695 for Stoptech- Note will not fit stock 17" rims only aftermarket 17" rims. Or AP Racing big brake kit for $1595, see
http://www.mossmini.com/Shop/ViewPro...eIndexID=36717
Or

Randy Webb can usually get these same brake kits and price match.

I have those Tarox's on my 16" wheeler. they are very nice, however:
1. the fronts fit as expected: new rotor, new caliper, new lines. The barely cleared my 16" x7 Superleggeras, but they did clear. When I put on the AKS 16 x 6.5, (my winter NY street strength setup, i needed a 1/4" spacer for the caliper to clear the spokes axially.
2. the rear kit consists of rotors, and caliper brackets and lines. You use the stock caliper, moved outward to fit the larger rotor. There is a misprint in the BMP listing for the rears. If you look carefully, they give the same part number for the rear kit for 16 and 17" wheels. It doesn't fit the rears. I did get it to fit, but I had to machine the OD of the rotor (removing .800 on the diameter) and redrill the caliper bracket, moving the caliper radially in .400. Then it fit fine, with the brake pad just fitting the friction area on the rotor and clearing the wheel. No spacer need for the AKS wheels.
3. whether you have the 16" or 17" wheels, the emergency brake cable will not fit with the caliper moved out for the larger rotors. I extended the inner cable 3/8" by grinding the adjustment screw stop; then there was enough screw range to work. To extend the sheath, I made a couple of 5/8" long spacers and fit them where the sheath passes through the chassis up in the tunnel.
I posted a photo in the "thank you BMP" thread.
I'm a glutton for punishment. I love the brakes; they are very high quality

I like the Tar-ox brakes, and they do work great. We have them on both of our cooper S's. And when ever we have magazine people or track instructors test our cars. The brakes seems to really impress every one of them. When we were invited to do the Euro Tuner GP tuner challenge, our car was the smallest displacment engine, and took an impressive 3rd fastest lap time. Our driver, who had never driven a Cooper was amazed at the performance or the car and the Tar-ox brakes. He is familliar with the Tarox brakes since thet are the same basic setup he uses on his BMW race car. If you use the front kit with the 323mm rear kit the set is a very well balanced setup.
This does require the use of 17" wheels, and some wheels do require the uses of spacers. However the BBS RGR wheels (our choice) are direct fits. The spacers are OK to use, we recommend you also replace the wheel bolts with studs, and lug nuts. The rear kits now include cable spacers to allow the calipers to move out further.
