If I'm not mistaken, that's a microphone built in, so that in case of an emergency (OnStar) speaks through that... I think it was an add-on feature... "Cost a few $, but you get so many months of free OnStar" sort of deal.

on my mini it is just a cover with an empty space. Maybe it was for a switch or what he said? ^^

Looks like it's in the spot where the blue tooth mic is. I'm not sure about it being for Onstar. I do know some Volkswagons came with Onstar. Seems one of the developers let GM and went to VW. He then incorporated it into some of their cars and then GM sued and that was the end of Onstar outside of GM.

how about asking your dealer rep? just drive in there & ask anyone on the floor - they'll tell you.

It's the bluetooth mic. MINI does not offer OnStar. If you don't have bluetooth, you can pull that little vent open and you'll see there's no mic behind it. If you do have bluetooth, the mic will be there.

There is no mic there on any of the R50/R53 cars. That's just the spot it would go if you would have gotten the phone hands free kit. BMW's have the same little gille in the headliners for their mics. This never was a very popular option on the R53, cause most aftermarket bluetooth kits worked better.
