Cold Start Rattle aka Death Rattle
Cold Start Rattle aka Death Rattle
Just wondering if anyone in the Milwaukee/SE Wisconsin area has had this problem with their Mini 2007 or later models. I've had mine in 3 times now and the word on the Forum is that BMW can't find a fix. Concerned about engine damage if this goes on and on. Here's a link from this forum:

Appreciate any feedback.

IA has been good but more concerned with BMW
I originally had car in for the rattle in Nov. 09, along with the sunroof not sealing properly. They replaced the Timing Chain Tensioner for the rattle. Mini sounded fine for about 2 months, then in January 2010 started again, but more infrequently. Also was stalling out at cold start in reverse. IA lectured me about using Top Tier premium gas etc. but did not find anything wrong as for the rattle. Mini home again.
After making sure I was only using Top Tier fuel for 2 months, stalling out stopped, but rattle became more pronounced.
Starting doing my own research on this forum and elsewhere. That's when I found that I'm not alone with this Mini Rattle.
Part of the problem with bringing it in for repair is that the rattle is not consistent. Sometimes it's there and sometimes not. It usually has to sit at the dealter overnite so they can cold start it and even then they may not hear it. The rattle usually stops after a mile or so of driving. Mini has to sit for a time before you start up and then maybe rattle, maybe not. I'm so attuned to the sound now, I'm practically looking for it.
Rattle began again and at every cold start. Became so loud within a day or two that it was embarassing driving the Mini around.
Brought it in again (now end of March). IA said Tensioner was fine but I was down over quart of oil (after oil change 3000 miles prior???). Topped it off and sent me on my way. Within 2 days rattle back.
Brought it back last week. IA's had it since last Tuesday. Now they're replacing the Timing Chain Kit, per BMW's instructions.
This is the same scenario that BMW has the dealers do for anyone who brings in their Mini for this "Death Rattle", but it has not been solving the problem.
Wanted to know if anyone else has been dealing with this Rattle and what they've come up against.
