puncture in runflat

I have Continental contiproconnect tires one of which has a screw in it. Has anyone repaired this kind of runflat tire? Manufacturer does not recommend repairing but replacing. This tire has 2000 miles on it and puncture is in the tread. Thanks for your help/advise.

As long as you have not driven on the tire while it was flat you should be fine with repairing it. The main reason they say not to repair a runflat is because once you drive on it while it's flat you ruin the structural integrity of the tire.

If it's in the tread it should be able to be plugged at any tire shop with no problem.

Why are they recommending replacement (aside from selling more tires)? Did you drive on the flat for a while?

I had a nail in my run flat. My perference is to never plug a tire. I had a patch applied at the local tire shop and 1000 miles with no problems.

Good luck finding a place that will repair it. Before I got rid of my runflats, I ran all over my area attempting to find tire shops that would repair a runflat, all of them said that they could not and that I'd just have to purchase a new tire. That is why I wound up switching to non-runflats and carrying a slime/compressor kit in my car.

I know my Mini dealer will repair a run flat but that is not the place to bring it to to have this kind of work done.

Whether they will repair a RFT is a little subjective but it is kind of dependent on where the nail is. If the nail is "too close" to the side wall or in the side wall, then most shops would not repair it.

If you are looking for a decent local tire place, I would suggest looking up this link: http://www.tirerack.com/installer/index.jsp

Thanks to all of you for advice. I got the tire fixed with no trouble since it hadn't been driven on. They plugged the hole and put a patch on the inside. Off and running again.

I had a screw or something in the middle of one of my BS rft's and Discount Tire repaired it with a plug and patch (inside) for free. Said it's repaired for life!

My left rear Continental RF had a nail in it the day I purchased it while still at the Carmax Dealer. It was late on a Saturday and no one was there in the service department. The salesman and I got in a 2009 Corvette ZO6 and drove to a nearby Walmart to pick up a tire plugging kit at my suggestion. We returned to Carmax and I repaired the tire myself. Have put about 1500 miles on it since then and no problems. Man that ZO6 was fun to drive, but at $60,000 it was slightly unaffordable :(

I plugged a nail hole in my wife's run-flat and it has approx 9000 miles on it since.....no problems. Most places won't repair a run-flat because of liability issues.....

The key to a good repair is to ream out the hole with a round file really well so that the jagged edges of the steel belts in the tire don't cut the plug after a few miles of driving.
