2006 Just a Cooper with CVT. Risky?

Hi,

I am thinking of purchasing a 2006 Automatic Just a Cooper. Do you think it is risky to purchase a car with a CVT? Are the 2006s a little more reliable?

TIA!!

I wouldn't

I'm sure many CVTs work fine, but there's been more than a few stories of CVT failure, all followed by big expense. Find an '07 auto, with the non-CVT transmission

I'd pass unless you want to take a chance of buying a $7000 transmission....

Agreed. I have an 06 Cooper w/CVT and I can't recommend it. It's a ticking time bomb.

I love mine...

My 2006 MC CVT is just fine... And I am keeping it... Extra warranty is there for any major fixes including transmission (in the future). Oh, yes it has only 12K so far. I got it "used" in May last year with only 7K... Go figure...
BTW, I see a lot of CVTs on the road, and no one complains...
Call me crazy (or lazy- for shifting)...

I have an '03 CVT JustaCooper that I purchased in November. After buying it and reading all the horror stories online, I spoke with the shop foreman at my MINI dealership who claims he has *never* seen a CVT fail since the dealership opened in 2002. Fact or Fiction? I dunno...but it was reassuring nonetheless.

Good luck on your search!

Asif

Don't do it. I've seen the expression on faces of CVT owners when they realize that they have to buy a VERY expensive trans...

Stay away! The CVT will give you cooties!
If you buy it get an extended warranty for a company like Warranty Direct. It is a heck of alot cheaper that shelling out $5K+ for a reman'ed tranny. BTW there are no new CVTs for MINIs. They're either factory re-manufactured or from a company in Michigan (never got the particulars).

No offense but maybe you could look into driving a manual? I did and I will never buy a automatic car again. But back on topic go with an 07+ auto, CVT's are to risky.

As the owner of a failed CVT (I converted it to a 6-speed manual...love it), I'd say that the odds are as good as any other major component for longevity. The difference is that if it DOES fail, the only option is very expensive ($5k-7k) replacement- there are no repair parts available. Therefore, if you get it, get a good warranty. My two cents.
