R50/53 Newb questions: Comfort Access offered when and transmission changes Gen1 to Gen2?

Newb questions: Comfort Access offered when and transmission changes Gen1 to Gen2?
Couple quick questions:
1. When did Mini start offering the comfort access package?
2. Is there a difference in the transmission from Gen1 to Gen2 cars? I drove a turbo 2008 Mini Cooper S hardtop and the gearshifter felt much more precise and I think had smaler throws than the 2007 JCW cabrio I drove. Both cars had about the same mileage, so I doubt its a usage difference. Did they make a change?
