Manual adjustment of side mirrors?

So I'm poking through the 2009 Cooper manual tonight, and I run across this:

Manual Adjustment
The mirrors can also be adjusted manually: press the edge of the glass.
(p33)

Does this mean that I can actually adjust them past the outer limits of what the interior mirror adjustering **** will allow? I try to follow the guidelines here: http://www.cartalk.com/content/features/mirrors/ but with the stock controls I can't actually get the side mirrors far enough to the left and right so that cars transfer from the rear view mirror to the side mirrors with a minimum of overlap. I know I don't have much of a blind spot in the Mini, but I'm sort of used to knowing where everything is, y'know?

I mean, I suppose there's always the "give them a good push and see", but I don't want to break anything. Yet.

you wont break anything, but i dont know about having them farther off than the car can do by remote.

Push the edge of the mirror, and it should ratchet a bit as it moves. You won't break anything.

Glad to see someone else using the Car Talk guys' method of mirror adjustment. It takes some getting use to, but it is THE BEST way to set up the side and rear view mirrors!

For me, the MINI side mirrors were too limiting. I put these Multivex mirrors on them and my blindspots are gone. You have to get used to not using the size of the car image for distance, but I found it easy to adapt.

Did you do just the drivers side or both sides and did the lower depth-of-field on the drivers side make it that much more difficult to use? I'm sure that it really helped with the blind spot! I'm interested in doing this, but worried that it would be difficult to adjust to.
