How much discount that you got for 2010 Cooper S with this economy?
Dear all,
I was going to order a Cooper S 2010, dealer is going to give me $500 off of MSRP, and throw in free mats.
If I buy something available at the dealer, they will discount $750 from MSRP.
Did anyone get a better deal?

None. I got free floor mats and about 1/3ed off on 3M clearbra. But I wasn't buying off the lot. I ordered mine and waited for it to be built.
There were none in the US that were the way I wanted it.
Premium, Sport, Convenience, Cold weather, Anthracite, Smart phone, Chili red black roof, black wheels, cloth seats.

I didn't get anything off. Only "free" floor mats. I don't think Towne MINI (Buffalo, NY) has ever discounted an ordered car, but I know they lowered their prices on the '09s sitting in the lot at the end of the year.

$5000 of MSRP for a 10 JCW. Now that's a good price even if it was a 09. Why people are still paying MSRP or accepting a measly $500 discount is ludicrous. It's a buyers market and you have the economy on your side. If you present yourself as lusting after a MINI you are on the hook to the salesperson for (near) full MSRP. You must be prepared to walk if you don't receive a reasonable price. Shop around the internet and get other prices. It may be worth the savings to fly and drive back (I've done this before) or ship back.
i just ordered a 2010 cooper s and was told there is no discount. one would think with a special order car that will sit on their lot no more than 1 day, they would be able to offer some kind of discount.
i tend to feel any discount is related to how large/how much volume a particular dealer has. my local mini dealer is brand new, in a relatively small town, with no other mini dealers around for hundreds of miles, so they can get away with offering no discounts.

Also your logic about one day, while sounding good is flawed. There are many reasons it cost the dealer more to order a car. I'll play devil's advocate for the dealer.
1) The dealer already has ordered "your" car and it's on the lot. If you don't buy it they must keep paying interest on it and sell it "again".
2) Time is money. If you buy "your" car off the lot you are history and the money is in the dealers bank in a couple of hours. Ordering takes much more time to fill out, place order, change order next week (when you decide you want another color), track and inform pestering customer....
3) I lost my job. The world and life is volatile and in a couple of months a lot can happen. You could find another car you like better or better deal. You can lose the "fever" and realize your current car gets you from point A to B.... Then not only is the dealer stuck without a sale they now have another car to pay interest on and it's likely configured in a way that not compromise friendly.
Just curious, why would a dealer sell you a car for around $2K under invoice? I'm not going to pull up the Edmunds invoice/MSRP sheet to get the exact figure but a JCW with MSRP of $30800 should have about $3000-3200 markup in it. Let us hear the reason they were willing to take a $2K hit for you.

I think James was "in control" of the sale. Don't ever let a salesman take control. Whoever mentioned pitting two MINI dealers against each other revealed another great strategy as well!
They're discounting the 2009s pretty heavily. I'm seeing up to US$5,000.00 off of a variety unsold '09s at my dealership.
I got US$1,000.00 off my 2010 Clubman S.
You quoted me but did you read what I wrote because I did state it was a 10. By the same token he didn't state it was a 09 either so we can only assume (unless you have some inside knowledge). I clearly worded my statement for either a 09 or 10 and not knowing....
...Now that's a good price even if it was a 09...

He didn't say it was a 2010. He said it was a 0 mile "new" JCW. I'd be willing to bet that it's an '09 as well because they're discounting the 2009s pretty heavily. I'm seeing up to US$5,000.00 off of a variety unsold '09s at my dealership.

As a former owner of new '03 MINI S, I found the buying experience of a '10 pretty disappointing.
Forget the discounts (which didn't exist in CT.) I couldn't find a dealer that showed a bit of interest in even selling me a car!
Both dealers in CT were apathetic,
MINI of Towson had a Clubman S Executive Car that I wanted to buy but getting them to return calls was difficult at best. (Ironically, they still have it available.)
Rhode Island didn't show interest.
I found the entire experience so strange that I didn't even want to give MINI my business. If it weren't for how much I love the car, they would have lost me.
I don't expect to be bothered and harassed, but not even returning calls was rude and presumptuous on their part that I would buy from them no matter what.
When I finally did place my order, I did so through the sales manager.
My take is that:
a) They are selling cars like crazy in the Northeast and East Coast, or
b) A lot of the sales people just don't care about selling cars.

I tried, but it didn't work because two mini dealers in WA state are belonging to the same owner. They will not compete.

That deal had to be on a 2009... can't see them doing it on a 2010.
It was almost a year ago (Jan 20th, 2009) that I bought Spike. Got $3000 off for buying and '08 and another $2000 for paying cash. I'm talking Canadian and we pay about 33% more up here for the same MINI. Dealer also offered me $4000 for my 1991 BMW and I countered with $6000 and they took it. For me $11000 off sticker was excellent.

I simply do not believe tall tales like this, and NAM is full of false discount one-upmanship. Your claim of "0 miles" gives it away. No car, not even new and untitled, has zero miles from the factory.

Visits to my local BMW dealer are simply unpleasant. The sales staff ignores me, never asks if I need any help, to the point of being rude. I recently went in for a visit - a friend was looking for a used X5 with third row seating. The showroom floor was empty. We walked in and there were 3 people sitting at a table: the sales manager, a salesman and one of the finance managers. They continued their non-work related conversation for quite some time, completely ignoring me and my friend. After several minutes of listening to their inane conversation, my friend politely interrupted and asked if the X5 on the lot had third row seating and if so, he would like to see it. The salesman abruptly replied the X5 they had did not have third row seating and then continued his conversation with his coworkers. We walked out and looked in the X5's window and it did indeed have third row seating. Unreal.
In an effort to avoid my local BMW dealer, I decided to contact two other nearby dealers to inquire about ordering a 1-series. The first salesman was slow to return my phone calls and eventually stopped returning my calls. The sales manager at the other dealer took my number and said he would have a salesman call me - never happened.
In the end, I placed an order for a 2010 Mini Cooper S at my local Mini dealer. Fortunately my salesman there had a pulse and was happy to take me out on test drives and help me with my decision.
