Craven Speed R53 intake installation

This project took me around an hour with minimal tools from pulling into the garage to pulling back out. I am a professional aircraft mechanic so depending on your mechanical prowess it could take more or less time.

Tools needed: 1/4" drive Ratchet, extensions, 1/4" drive socket set, TORX bits, common and Phillips screwdrivers
The kit came with air box, clear top, filter, cross brace (part of box structure), and hardware.

(front of airbox)

The instructions were pretty good but the illustrations leave something to be desired. They look good at first but as you get to building you realize they left some stuff out of the drawing. It's no big deal because the written part tells you what to do. There are more written instructions on the back of the page.

First remove battery terminal from air box, remove hoses from air box, and air box top. The band on the intake hose is ridiculous and you can remove it with a screwdriver and some pliers. I can't even begin to explain how to do it. I can tell you it's a sort of pinch and pry technique. You'll see when you get there.

Next you'll remove the ECU cover and unplug the ECU. you can remove the ECU with a gentle tug upward at this point or wait till you take the airbox out (it is part of the stock air box assembly)

See that tab that looks like a trigger just above my thumb? Pull it out and the ECU plug will come right off. There is one pull-tab on each of the two ECU plugs.

DON'T FORGET this bolt. You have to remove it or the air box won't come out.

There are a few other screws that are holding the stock air box in place but they are easy to reach and require no special abilities to remove.

Now, when you go to remove to stock box be patient and think it through. It won't just slip out. you have to kind of wrangle it out by pulling forward and then up. it may help to remove the forward scoop that comes in through the grill first. Once you've done this, you are through the hard part.

(Stock air box removed)

This is what your engine bay should look like.

Notice the rigid intake tube to the bottom right? I left it in when I removed the air box...but I HIGHLY encourage taking it out first. It was kind of a pain with it left in. You won't be using this peice anyway, unless you make a custom air hose to run into the new box.

Here is a shot of me removing the ECU from the air box and the ECU itself. Remember SHORT plug to the REAR. When you put it back in your Craven box you will install it INSIDE the air box..not on the outside. The instructions are not clear about that at all.

THIS IS THE WRONG WAY

WRONG WRONG WRONG!!!!!

NEXT:
remove the plastic piece that was behind your stock box you will need some TORX bits for this. you can find a decent cheap set at Walmart, Aoutozone, Sears, etc...

There are two bolts on the bottom of this piece too.

DONT FORGET! There is a grommet holding the top right (the car's left) of this plastic piece. It has a phillips head screw holding it in. Just pop that bad-boy out of there and HOLD ONTO YOUR OLD HARDWARE!!!

Here is a look at the bay without the plastic barrier.

After you've built up the new air box, install it into the hole you've created. The holes on the new box line up with the holes where you took the screws out of the plastic piece. use your old hardware to attach the new box to the car.

The intake hose is a real ***** to put back on. VERY TIGHT. you might try some soapy water to lube it up a little. Don't douse it, just a light coating should do. It won't hurt anything so long as you wipe off the excess when you are done. I won't be held responsible for soap in your engine if you decide to get stupid with this advice.

Here is the proper placement of the ECU in the new box.

The battery mounting sucks on this air box. I'll be designing a new mounting bracket as soon as I can. At this point you will install the filter itself with a simple metal band. You can tighten this band with a ratchet or common screw driver. REMEMBER to install your weather stripping across the top of the air box. It should pretty much fall into place. then install the clear top.

THERE YOU HAVE IT! Start your engine, let it warm up a bit, then find a nice stretch of road. Turn off your radio and listen to the beautiful whine and gurgle of your engine breathing a little easier. I hope this helps someone!

Desmobot, excellent post! Very nice install. I can't wait to see it in person; the kit looks a lot better than I imagined.

Can't wait to see the rest of the items installed!
